The Cleveland Browns defense is as good as advertised. David Klingler has the bruises to prove it.

The Browns sacked Klingler six times, intercepted two passes and returned his fumble for a touchdown Sunday, beating the Cincinnati Bengals, 27-14.

The Browns fell behind, 14-0, in the first quarter but scored the next 27 points, clinching it when Stevon Moore returned Klingler’s fumble 22 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Cornerback Everson Walls forced the fumble, jarring it loose with the third sack of his 13-year career.

Cleveland’s goal-line defense then withstood a first and goal from the one-yard line, stopping Derrick Fenner three times before Klingler fumbled the snap on fourth down. Klingler could barely hear himself during the series, because he was in the shadow of the rowdy “Dawg Pound” bleachers while jets from a nearby air show roared overhead.

Michael Dean Perry sacked Klingler twice, and rookie Selwyn Jones intercepted two passes.

The Bengals, whose roster includes 28 rookies and second-year players, rode two big plays to the 14-0 first-quarter lead.

Klingler and Jeff Query connected for a 51-yard pass play that set up Ostell Miles’ four-yard touchdown run. Rookie Patrick Robinson’s 36-yard punt return set up a drive capped by Carl Pickens’ five-yard touchdown reception.
