PREP FOOTBALL ’93 / SMALL SCHOOLS: 1992 in Review

It took only one pass completion for Brethren Christian to win its first Olympic League football title since 1982.

With less than two minutes remaining in the regular-season finale, quarterback Reggie Davis hit Scott Thomas with a 19-yard touchdown pass, giving the Warriors a 14-12 victory.

It was Davis’ only completion of the game. The victory gave Brethren a share of the title with Whittier Christian, but the Warriors advanced to the playoffs as the league’s top team because they beat the Heralds, 12-7, in the first league game.

Brethren then shut out Malibu Kilpatrick, 7-0, and Sun Valley Village Christian, 19-0. Eventual champion Big Bear ended the Warriors’ run, 24-14.

Whittier Christian advanced to the second round before losing to Kern Valley, 35-32. Aaron Meschuk gained 2,208 yards--fourth best single-season total in Orange County history--and scored 26 touchdowns for the Heralds.

Orange Lutheran won six of its first seven games before running into the league’s top three teams in succession, losing to Brethren, Cerritos Valley Christian and Whittier Christian.

Calvary Chapel, in its first season since moving over from the weaker Arrowhead League, struggled, but turned in the upset of the year, beating Brethren, 10-7.

Southern California Christian, the preseason Arrowhead League favorite last year, lost running back Mike Jacot, to a broken foot in the fifth game. The Flames lost four of their last six games, including a 35-6 loss to Mammoth in the first round of the Division XI playoffs.
