Bellflower 12, Brethren Christian 0--The Warriors turned the ball over five times and managed only 117 yards offense. Bellflower quarterback Mark Hays rushed for two touchdowns in a nonleague game at Artesia High.

Standout Brethren quarterback Reggie Davis completed just two of nine passes for 22 yards, and threw two interceptions.

Hays scored on runs of 40 and 20 yards in the first half, and had 73 first-half rushing yards in six carries.

Bellflower’s first drive covered 63 yards in seven plays, kept alive when Brethren was assessed an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty after Bellflower was stopped on third and seven at the Brethren 46. Hays then kept the ball on an option play and weaved 20 yards through the Brethren secondary for a 6-0 lead.

Four plays after an 18-yard Brethren punt, Hays scrambled away from pressure and cruised in for his second touchdown.

“We had a lot of first-game jitters, but no excuses,” Davis said.
