COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Wins Women’s Volleyball Opener

Jamie Torromeo had 15 kills and Becki Gehlke added 12 as Golden West opened its women’s volleyball season with a three-game sweep of Grossmont in a nonconference match Tuesday at Grossmont.

Gehlke is a returning member of Golden West’s team that went 29-2 and finished third in the state after winning titles in 1990 and 1991. Torromeo is a transfer from Pepperdine.

Grossmont is 0-1.

In other nonconference volleyball:

San Diego Mesa 3, Saddleback 2--Kelly Gallup and Yumi Yamazaki each had 13 kills, but host Saddleback fell to San Diego Mesa, 10-15, 15-12, 15-17, 15-17, 15-3, in the season opener for both teams. Missy Williams led Mesa with 10 kills.

Chaffey 3, Rancho Santiago 1--Rancho Santiago loss the season opener to host Chaffey, 7-15, 11-15, 15-12, 13-15. Brenda Parks led Rancho Santiago with 10 kills.

In nonconference men’s soccer:

East Los Angeles 4, Orange Coast 4--Host Orange Coast was leading, 3-1, with about eight minutes remaining, then had to rally with a goal in the final two minutes for the tie.

OCC’s Rafael Mosqueda, who had three goals, got past two East L.A. players near the top of the penalty box, then beat the goalkeeper to tie it.

East Los Angeles’ rally started when Luis Cruz scored on a penalty kick with eight minutes left. The Huskies tied it, 3-3, on a goal by Adan Vasquez two minutes later.

Richardo Delgado scored with three minutes left to put East Los Angeles ahead, 4-3, with three minutes left. Scott Hutcheon scored OCC’s other goal. OCC is 0-0-2 and East L.A. is 2-0-1.

East Los Angeles eliminated Orange Coast from the playoffs last season in the semifinal round.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

Moorpark 1, Golden West 1--Heather Williams scored with about four minutes left for visiting Moorpark. Golden West took a 1-0 lead in the first half when a Moorpark player accidentally kicked the ball in her own goal.

In nonconference water polo:

Citrus 13, Saddleback 7--Trevor Rodin scored five goals for host Saddleback (0-4). Reggie Simiano had four for Citrus (5-1).
