TOP PERFORMERS

Anaheim sophomore Reuben Droughns, who led the county in rushing after Week 1 with 262 yards in 25 carries against Fullerton, carried the ball more often (33 rushing attempts) but gained fewer yards (159) in a 28-7 loss to Loara Friday night.

Valencia’s Chris Draft gained 156 yards rushing, including a 71-yard touchdown run as the Tigers defeated Servite, 38-0. He also caught three passes for 40 yards, one a 21-yard touchdown reception.

Allen Vaughn rushed for 142 yards in 22 carries, caught six passes for 102 yards and scored three touchdowns (giving him six in two games) in San Clemente’s 44-13 victory over Carlsbad.

Enrique Bozman scored four touchdowns in the first half as Los Alamitos rolled to a 49-0 nonleague victory over Pasadena Blair.

Bozman, a senior transfer from Bellflower High, finished with 134 yards in 12 carries. He has rushed for 287 yards in 28 carries and scored six touchdowns in two games this season.

Quarterback Scott Bartoni completed 13 of 20 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns and scored on an 11-yard run to lead Fountain Valley over Lakewood, 52-38.

Newport Harbor running back Wade Tift had more yards rushing (130) than Ocean View had in total offense (92) in Newport Harbor’s 17-3 victory. Ocean View managed 62 yards rushing in the game; Tift had 56 yards on one carry.

Esperanza running back Dahrin Footman carried the ball 18 times for 117 yards and one touchdown, while on the other side of the line at Santa Ana Stadium, Mater Dei sophomore Michael Graham gained 118 yards and scored a touchdown in 20 carries.

Troy junior halfback Ryl Relatores wanted somehow to include his injured older brother, Rechi, in Friday night’s game against Garden Grove. He did so by wearing his brother’s jersey, No. 33. Relatores responded by rushing for 110 yards and one touchdown to help lead the Warriors to a 32-3 victory over the Argonauts.

Santa Margarita’s quarterback Derek Yankoff rushed for 89 yards and two touchdowns in 15 carries and completed 13 of 23 passes for 113 yards and one touchdown.

Los Amigos quarterback Ape Tuato led the Lobos on both sides of the ball in their 16-6 victory over Century. The junior scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns on runs of one and 26 yards and stopped a late Centurion drive with an interception.

Brian Moore, Marina’s 6-foot-3 220-pound center/defensive tackle, is one of the least likely punt return threats. Yet, when a short Corona del Mar punt took a crazy backward bounce toward Moore, he picked up the ball and ran 75 yards for a touchdown.

ON DEFENSE

Where’s the defense? Not many teams can brag about blowing out Mater Dei the way Esperanza did in its 33-7 victory over the top-ranked Monarchs. The 33 points was the most scored against Mater Dei since Mission Viejo defeated the Monarchs, 42-23, in 1990. Mater Dei finished 6-5 that season.

Corona del Mar’s defense stopped Marina on three series after the Vikings had first-down-and-goal situations. On fourth and goal at the one on the final stand, Sea King linebacker J.J. DiCesare led the charge that threw Marina running back Muke Byers for a five-yard loss.

Canyon punter Casey Wilson had a big hand in putting away Buena Park. Twice in the fourth quarter he pinned the Coyotes inside their 10-yard line with punts of 52 and 42 yards.

LATE HEROICS

Rancho Alamitos’ Richard Allen picked up a fumble and raced 80 yards for a touchdown with 2:40 left in the game, and he outran Costa Mesa’s secondary moments later on a 77-yard touchdown run to salvage a 20-20 tie.

HEADING SOUTH FOR THE WEEKEND

Tony Parrish, a former standout football and track and field athlete for Marina now at Washington, took advantage of the Huskies’ bye week to visit Southern California and take in Marina’s game with Corona del Mar at Newport Harbor High.

Parrish, a redshirt free safety, likely won’t see any action for Washington for a couple of years, but he already has stories to bring home.

Take Washington’s opening day rout of Stanford in Seattle. Parrish suited up and watched from the sideline.

“That warmed me up,” he said. “To actually experience a game in a stadium in front of 71,000 people was really different.”

ON THE DOTTED LINE

Valencia Coach Mike Marrujo was met at midfield by a smiling Servite assistant after Friday night’s game.

“Sign the contract, sign the contract,” the Friar assistant said.

The two schools have a second home-and-home series pending, awaiting Marrujo’s signature. It might be a good move. Valencia had just stomped the Friars, 38-0.

“Don’t kick our (butts) and not sign the contract,” the assistant said.

Marrujo just smiled.

CONDUCT UNBECOMING

Los Amigos Coach Steve Bolton was pleased with his team’s performance against Century but expressed disappointment with several unsportsmanlike conduct penalties against the Lobos, one leading to Century’s only score of the game. “The kids have to learn to be more disciplined and not hit players after the whistle. We’ve played Century for four years now and it’s been a problem in every game against them. I’m embarrassed.”

A 15-yard penalty against a Los Amigos player gave the Centurions a first down at the Lobo 12-yard line. Three plays later, Julio Garcia scored.

CONDUCT UNBECOMING, PART II

During the last three minutes of a 52-38 Fountain Valley victory, the Barons and Lakewood had three players ejected--Adam O’Rourke from Fountain Valley, Jeff Link and Ron Stewart from Lakewood--and each team amassed 45 yards in penalties.
