SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The Leuzinger High football team stole some pages from the Torrance playbook Thursday night. The Olympians went to the air en route to a 23-0 nonleague victory at Torrance.

Leuzinger quarterback Jason Simmons completed eight of 11 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound senior, who gained 39 yards in seven carries, also dashed in for a seven-yard touchdown run to extend the Olympians’ lead to 20-0 midway through the fourth quarter. Jason Sharp had seven receptions for 168 yards and a touchdown.

“We haven’t passed this much in awhile,” Leuzinger Coach Fred Boehm said.

Torrance quarterback Tony Brown, who passed for 354 yards to help the Tartars rally from a 21-0 deficit against Redondo last week, was intercepted twice and finished 12 of 24 for 126 yards.

“Deep inside, we thought we had a chance to shut them out,” Leuzinger cornerback Will Moreland said about Torrance (2-1), which had scored 77 points in its first two games. “We knew they came back last week, so we tried not to get too excited when we were ahead.”

Simmons completed four of seven passes for 172 yards in the first half, including second-quarter touchdown passes to Sharp and tight end Aaron Williams to help Leuzinger (2-1) to a 14-0 halftime lead. Simmons hooked up with Williams on a short pass up the middle for a 61-yard score to open the scoring with 8 minutes 37 seconds left before halftime.

On the Olympians’ next series, Simmons lofted a short pass over the shoulder of Sharp, who raced down the left sideline for a 57-yard touchdown with 6:13 to play in the second quarter. Simmons and Williams connected on the two-point conversion to make the score, 14-0.
