Many thought this would be a rebuilding season at Charter Oak, which graduated several talented players from last season’s football team, including Times’ All-San Gabriel Valley running back Mike Harris.

But the Chargers, who finished the regular season 10-0 in 1992, are unbeaten at 4-0 after Friday’s 19-13 victory over Glendora. Junior quarterback Joey Strycula has been a catalyst for Charter Oak. He scored three touchdowns against Glendora.

San Gabriel’s football team, which ended a 35-game losing streak against Mountain View two weeks ago, was unable to parlay its victory into a winning streak.

Bassett defeated San Gabriel, 35-21, Friday behind a 245-yard rushing performance by Joey Sanchez, who scored three touchdowns.

San Gabriel will try to get back on the winning track Friday against San Marino.

The San Marino boys’ cross-country team and the South Pasadena water polo team are ranked first in Division III.

Pasadena Poly is the top-ranked girls’ tennis team in Division IV.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Mt. San Antonio College football team continues its Mission Conference schedule Saturday night at Saddleback.

The Mounties (4-0) are coming off a 49-31 victory over Rancho Santiago, during which Cody Lee Smith completed 20 of 28 passes for 328 yards and two touchdowns.

Running back Leonard Green rushed for 70 yards and three touchdowns and caught five passes for 124 yards and a touchdown.

Ronnie Layton caught four passes for 92 yards, including a 54-yard touchdown pass play.

Citrus (2-1), which had a bye last week, plays host to San Bernardino Valley on Saturday. Citrus defeated College of the Desert, 9-7, on Sept. 25.

Pasadena City College (0-4) is hoping to pick up its first victory Saturday when the Lancers play host to Riverside.

PCC had six turnovers during a 36-11 loss to Orange Coast last week. Greg Pierce scored PCC’s only touchdown when he recovered the ball in the end zone after a blocked punt.

PCC will honor the Junior Rose Bowl teams of 1951, 1966 and 1977 at a dinner following its homecoming game against El Camino on Oct. 23. Information: (818) 585-7384.

COLLEGES

La Verne’s football team plays a nonconference game at Menlo on Saturday after remaining unbeaten in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 31-21 victory over Occidental.

La Verne (3-1, 3-0 in the SCIAC) had eight sacks against Occidental. Craig Stewart had a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and Bill Battin caught four passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns.

Leopard quarterback Ryan Campuzano continues to lead the SCIAC in passing with 193.5 yards a game. Danny Pasquil of La Verne is the conference’s leading rusher at 138.3 yards a game.

Pomona-Pitzer (1-3, 0-2 in the SCIAC) has a bye this week after losing a SCIAC game to Whittier, 26-25.

Tony Fadulu gained 149 yards and Josh Spitzen completed 16 of 33 passes for 258 yards for Pomona-Pitzer.

Claremont (0-3, 0-2) also has a bye this week after losing to first-place Redlands, 56-14. Claremont quarterback John Shipp passed for 194 yards, but four of his passes were intercepted. The Stags have lost 22 consecutive games.

Azusa Pacific (1-3) travels to Humboldt State Saturday after losing to Cal State Hayward, 45-36.

Azusa quarterback Jack Manu passed for 274 yards and two touchdowns as Azusa compiled 428 yards. However, the Cougars gave up 652.

Manu and Dan Mitchell hooked up on an 82-yard touchdown pass play, the longest in school history.

Rebecca Huereque and Tracy Nguyen of Cal Poly Pomona will compete in the Rolex Small College tennis championships Oct. 28-31 at Edmund, Okla.

Huereque won the singles title at last weekend’s regional finals at Pomona, defeating Denise Valentin of Grand Canyon, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. She teamed with Nguyen to defeat Valentin and Penny Statters for the doubles title.

The Cal Poly Pomona men’s and women’s cross-country teams will play host to the Poly Invitational on Saturday.

Chuck Foote of Pomona is coming off a third-place overall finish at the Stanford Invitational, which included NCAA Division I, II and III schools. Rosetta Hunter, who placed 27th, was the Broncos’ highest women’s finisher.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Lance Davis, Nogales--Davis, a senior, scored five touchdowns and ran for three two-point conversions in the Nobles’ 56-30 victory over Highland.

Davis rushed for three touchdowns and scored on an 85-yard kickoff return and 80-yard interception return.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Rebecca Huereque, Cal Poly Pomona--Huereque, a two-time All- American, advanced to the Rolex Small College tennis championships by winning regional titles in singles and doubles.

Huereque will compete for national titles Oct. 28-31 at Edmund, Okla.

MISCELLANY

The AAF Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena will play host to the 1995 U.S. Senior Nationals swim meet. . . . A softball league for men 55 and older is being organized in the West San Gabriel Valley. Information: (818) 573-0129.

The second annual Bowl-to-Bowl Walk and Health and Fitness Fair will be staged Oct. 23 in Pasadena.

The event includes a 3- and 5-K race walk and a 5-K fitness walk around the Rose Bowl, and a 1.5-K recreational walk from the Rose Bowl to Memorial Park. All ages can participate. Information: (818) 795-4331.
