An unidentified 29-year-old transient was killed Sunday when he was run over by a southbound Amtrak train at 10:15 p.m., police said Monday.

Train personnel saw a man lying on the railroad tracks where they pass underneath the Garden Grove Freeway but could not stop in time, Police Lt. John Higley said.

“The train was operating with its bells ringing, horn sounding and headlights on bright,” said Ron Scolaro, an Amtrak spokesman.

The victim, whose name was not released because officials were trying to contact his relatives, died at the scene from head and leg injuries, Higley said.

Other transients told police the victim apparently had been drinking before getting onto the tracks near La Veta Avenue and Bristol Street, Higley said.

The southbound train was delayed for nearly two hours. A northbound train was stopped in Santa Ana and its passengers transferred to buses.

No passengers were injured.
