SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Anaheim sophomore running back Reuben Droughns was too much for Magnolia as the Colonists rolled to a 27-0 Orange League victory Friday night at Western High School.

Droughns got off to a slow start, but gained 134 yards in the second half. He finished with 196 yards in 33 carries.

“I had to jump on him at half time,” Anaheim Coach Todd Borowski said. “I told him to cut the ball up field, and he did that and you saw what happened.”

Anaheim (4-2, 1-0) opened the scoring late in the first quarter, when Droughns capped a six-minute, 84-yard drive with a five-yard burst for a touchdown. Joel Vasquez kicked a 23-yard field goal to give the Colonist a 10-0 halftime lead.

Anaheim scored on their first drive of the second half, when Jaime Carlos hooked up with Steve Lopez on a four-yard touchdown reception to give the Colonist a 17-0 cushion.

Droughns scored his second touchdown early in the fourth quarter to give the Colonist a 24-0 advantage. Vasquez’s second field goal capped the scoring.

The Colonist defensive line limited Magnolia to only 54 yards rushing.

“It’s always a great way to start league play, (but) our next games are going to be hell,” Borowski said. “All these (league) games are tough.”
