Baseball Divisions

* In response to “Baseball Won’t Be What It Used To Be,” editorial, Oct. 5:

Baseball’s pennant races are not going to die next year as a result of the new divisional system. While it is true that San Francisco would have run away with the National League West under the new alignment, there would still be fantastic races between Atlanta and Philadelphia in the NL East, and between St. Louis and Houston in the NL Central. Teams will still fight for first place, because under the new playoff format, wild card teams have to face the top division winner with no hope of a home-field advantage.

The fact is that baseball will make its own pennant races. With expanded playoffs, more teams will be scrambling for the precious berths. Oct. 3 will not fade into distant memory; rather it will be relived year after year.
