THE SOUTHLAND FIRESTORM : The Fire’s Path

Along the narrow streets and ravines above Pasadena, scores of homes were destroyed by fire. While the flames ravaged some houses, others were left unscathed, flowers blooming and ivy thriving. Fire struck the neighborhood Wednesday and was still raging Friday in the east. Here is a look at what happened on one street:

A. Damage: None to house; horse trailer scorched; lush ivy in driveway shaded by olive trees; lawn neatly mowed; roses blooming.

House: Rambling ranch style.

Roof: Ceramic tile

B. Damage: Destroyed; chimney and part of wall left standing. Car also destroyed.

House: All-wood three bedroom with deck overlooking canyon.

Roof: Composite.

Note: Back yard only partly scorched. Olive trees and succulents thriving 30 feet from rubble.

C. Damage: Destroyed; three chimneys left standing; barbecue, redwood pool furniture and pool with plastic pool cover unscathed. Three cars destroyed.

House: Sprawling modern three bedroom with pool.

Roof: Flat rock dotted with skylights.

Note: Lantern and redwood hanging planter at entryway intact; flowers in planter wilted but not burnt; lemon tree in back corner of yard alive.

D. Damage: None to house; fire crawled along ravine beside house, melted garden hoses and scorched flower garden.

House: Stucco.

Roof: Flat rock roof, cleared before fire and hosed down.

Note: Lemon trees in back yard blackened by flames survived.

E. Damage: None; Hill in front of house blackened, planted with small wooden sign that reads “Believe!”; oak grove in front of house unscathed.

House: Modern wood, rock and glass.

Roof: Rock.

Note: After one quiet night, owl and blue jays spotted by resident Friday.

F. Damage: None to house; gnarled remnant of burned tree on front of property.

House: Medium-size stucco.

Roof: Shingle.

G. Damage: Destroyed; Only chimney stands; scorched pine trees above property.

House: Unknown type.

Roof: Unknown.

Note: Carport intact, with refrigerator and old Mercedes-Benz untouched by fire.

H. Damage: Garage attached to house destroyed, with roof melted; adjoining house undamaged; once-heavy landscaping surrounding house scorched. Burnt hulk of a car inside what once was garage.

House: Low, stucco set below street level.

Roof: Rock.

I. Damage: None to house or landscaping; Outdoor cabana and one palm tree next to house scorched.

House: Multileveled modern stucco, with closed eaves (rafters unexposed), rock fountain and well-manicured landscaping.

Roof: Rock.

Note: Roses blooming.

J. Damage: House intact; Garage adjoining house destroyed.

House: Stucco.

Roof: Rock. It was doused by owner’s friend, who sneaked into fire area.

Note: 20-year-old junipers in front area burned to ground. Planted Friday with one bunch of fluorescent yellow mums.

K. Damage: House intact. RV and golf cart in driveway incinerated; Home security sign on fence melted.

House: Type unknown.

Roof: Non-combustible tile roof.

L. Damage: House intact; Barn in back yard burnt to the ground. Horse survived fire by staying close to house.

House: Stucco ranch style.

Roof: Composite.

M. Damage: None to house; Oleanders and rose bushes blackened.

House: Stucco.

Roof: Rock.

N. Damage: Destroyed. House and barn leveled. Chimney and shower only structures left standing; one duck and other pet birds incinerated; art, two cars, two trucks and a horse trailer destroyed; horses saved.

House: Three bedroom.

Roof: Non-combustible tile

Note: Barbecues intact; inches from rubble of house, purple water hyacinths blooming near pond where mosquito fish survived.
