Couples Has 67 to Lead at Kapalua

Fred Couples, improving his score each day, shot a six-under 67 Saturday to take a two-stroke lead after three rounds of the Kapalua International on the Hawaiian island of Maui.

Couples, who opened with rounds of 69 and 68, is 13 under at 204. Mike Hulbert shot a 71 and is two strokes back at 206. David Peoples had a 69 to put him at 207.

Couples started the day at the par-73 Plantation Course two shots off the lead, but after birdies on four of the first nine holes was tied with Hulbert. Couples moved ahead by one stroke with four holes to play when Hulbert bogeyed, then opened up the two-shot advantage by making a 50-foot birdie putt on the next to last hole.

Peter Jacobsen’s 67 put him four shots back at 208. Hulbert, Peoples and Jacobsen are all former Kapalua champions.

Colin Montgomerie of Scotland overcame a shaky start to shoot a four-under 67 and take a one-stroke lead after three rounds of the Volvo Masters at Sotogrande, Spain. . . . Dale Eggeling shot a six-under 66 and moved into a share of the lead with Hollis Stacy and Tina Barrett after two rounds of the Japan Queens Cup at Yokawa. The three Americans are at 136, eight under.

Boxing

Orlin Norris, the brother of World Boxing Council super-welterweight champion Terry Norris, knocked out Marcelo Figueroa in the sixth round at Paris to win the vacant World Boxing Assn. cruiserweight title. Norris, 28, of Lubbock, Tex., is 38-4 with 21 knockouts. Figueroa is 33-4.

Tennis

Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia will play in his third consecutive final today in the Paris Open.

Ivanisevic had 23 aces in beating Stefan Edberg of Sweden, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3). He will play Andrei Medvedev of Ukraine, who rallied to beat France’s Arnaud Boetsch, 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5.

Top-seeded Martina Navratilova fought off two match points to beat 17-year-old Lindsay Davenport, advancing to the final of the Bank of the West Classic at Oakland with a 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory.

Nathalie Tauziat of France advanced to the final of the Bell Challenge at Quebec when Helen Kelesi of Toronto had to withdraw because of a sore knee and pulled stomach muscle. Tauziat was leading, 6-1, 1-0. Katerina Maleeva of Bulgaria advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Patricia Hy.

Auto Racing

Ayrton Senna won his final matchup with Alain Prost, lapping all but two of his rivals as he cruised to victory in Sunday’s Australian Formula One Grand Prix on the Adelaide street circuit.

The Brazilian three-time world champion had an average speed of 107.611 m.p.h. in his McLaren-Ford. France’s Prost, who already had clinched his fourth world title going into his 199th and final race before retirement, was second in his Williams-Renault, 9.259 seconds behind.

Bobby Labonte shattered the track record at Hickory Motor Speedway to take the pole position for today’s Pantry 300 NASCAR Busch Grand National race at Hickory, N.C.

Labonte turned a lap of 90.990 m.p.h. in a Chevrolet. The former track record of 89.354 was set by Steve Grissom in April of 1992.

Miscellany

Olympic champion Gustav Weder of Switzerland won the opening event of the two-man World Cup season at Koenigsee, Germany, and the United States bobsled team placed three crews among the top 15 finishers. The 13 Americans, five of whom are black, reported no incidents similar to the attack by a group of neo-Nazis on U.S. lugers in Oberhof last week.

The top U.S. finishers were Randy Will and Jeffrey Woodard, who tied for seventh at 1:39.23.

Maria Petrova of Bulgaria won the gold medal for the best overall gymnast at World Championship of Rhythmic Gymnastics at Alicante, Spain.
