COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Saddleback Edges Ventura in Water Polo

Tim Millington’s two-point goal broke a tie with with 58 seconds left, giving Saddleback College an 11-10 victory over Ventura on Wednesday in the first round of the Southern California Regional water polo playoffs at Ventura.

Millington scored from beyond the seven-meter line, giving Saddleback an 11-9 lead. Ventura, which led, 9-7, with 3:27 to play, answered with a goal but the Pirates could not tie the score.

Freshman Pedro deLima scored eight goals for Ventura (23-11-1).

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

San Diego d. Cal State Northridge, 14-16, 15-4, 15-8, 12-15, 15-10--Aimee Stone had 25 kills and Missy Clements had 23 for the Matadors, but it was not enough in a nonconference match at San Diego. Gretchen Gulbranson had 57 assists for Northridge (10-15).

CROSS-COUNTRY

Antelope Valley College won its first men’s title since 1971 and the Marauder women won their second in a row in the Foothill Conference finals at Lancaster.

The Marauders, led by individual champion Mark Sinderson, placed three runners among the top five finishers and had 37 points. College of the Desert was second with 56 points, followed by Rio Hondo with 72.

MEN’S SOCCER

The Master’s 1, Biola 0--Paul Smith scored midway through the second half on a penalty kick to lead the Mustangs (14-5-1) to victory in the NAIA District 3 semifinal match at Newhall.

The Mustangs will attempt to win their fourth consecutive District 3 title Saturday when they play at top-seeded Westmont, which defeated Pt. Loma Nazarene, 3-1, in the other semifinal.
