SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

John Frank passed for three touchdowns and Moukda Choulamany rushed for three more as Rancho Alamitos defeated Santiago, 42-14, to clinch third place in the Garden Grove League.

Frank, a sophomore, set the Rancho Alamitos single-season touchdown record when he connected with Mario Ramirez for an 89-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter. It was Frank’s 16th touchdown of the season, breaking the record set by Andy Jarmillo during the 1982 season.

The Vaqueros (6-3-1, 5-2 in league) used a balanced offensive attack against the Cavaliers, gaining 215 yards passing and 122 yards rushing. Ramirez also caught a 39-yard scoring pass and Richard Allen had a 49-yard scoring reception early in the second quarter. Choulamany scored on runs of 19, five and 22 yards. He finished with 118 yards in only eight carries.

“We’ve got a tough package when we execute properly,” Vaquero Coach Doug Case said. “We made several mental mistakes tonight. When we don’t make mistakes, we can play with anybody.”

In the first half, Rancho Alamitos had three turnovers, two of which led to Santiago touchdowns. The Vaqueros also had two touchdowns called back because of penalties.
