Share
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Fountain Valley set two school records and Cory Clark intercepted three first-half passes as the Barons coasted to a 63-20 victory over Santa Ana Thursday night at Huntington Beach High, clinching a Division II football playoff berth.

The Barons gained a school-record 602 yards, including 380 in the first half, when Fountain Valley built a 42-0 lead. The final total of 63 points, the most scored by a county team this season, surpassed the school record of 52 set in 1984 and tied earlier this season.

Fountain Valley had four scoring drives, all shorter than 45 yards, in the first quarter. John Harcar scored from the 22 and Scott Bertoni scored from the three to give Fountain Valley a 14-0 lead. Jeremy Nicholson scored on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Bertoni and a 36-yard run to increase the Baron lead to 28-0.

Bertoni hit Jamal Hills with a 66-yard touchdown pass and Nicholson broke through for a 73-yard touchdown run in the second quarter for the Barons.

Clark, who was shifted from strong safety to free safety, filling in for the injured Keith Robinson, had three interceptions, including one in the end zone and one at the Baron two to preserve the first-half shutout.

Fountain Valley can finish no worst than a tie for third with Marina in the Sunset League, but will be designated the third-place representative should the Vikings defeat Huntington Beach tonight because of a victory over Marina.
