SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

West Torrance High won a share of the Pioneer League football title by beating Torrance, 35-14, Thursday night at Torrance. West will enter the Southern Section Division IX playoffs as the league’s No. 2 entry because it lost to co-champion North Torrance.

West (6-4, 4-1 in league) converted five of seven Torrance turnovers into touchdowns, including four in the first half, all on passes by junior quarterback Kirk Bolling.

Bolling, passing mostly from a one-back offense, completed 14 of 25 attempts for 166 yards and the four first-half touchdowns, with one interception.

Torrance quarterback Tony Brown passed for 222 yards on 19-of-30 passing for two touchdowns, but threw four interceptions, two of which led to West touchdowns.

It marked the second consecutive season that West eliminated Torrance (4-5-1, 2-2-1) from playoff contention in the final league game.

West took a 7-0 lead 31 seconds into the game. West’s Eddie Choi recovered a fumble by Torrance running back Jason Demacali on the Tartars’ first play from scrimmage. Bolling completed a 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jason Lane on the next play. Lane also caught a five-yard scoring pass that gave West a 21-7 lead late in the first quarter.

The Torrance offense outgained West, but the turnovers ruined the effort and gave West good field position. The longest West touchdown drive in the first half was 50 yards, and three were fewer than 30 yards.

West last shared the Pioneer championship in 1991 with South Torrance and Torrance.
