HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Burbank Advances in Tennis

Corie Simmons and Analisa Swan each won their three matches by 6-0 scores Thursday to lead Burbank to a 16-2 Southern Section Division III first-round girls’ tennis playoff victory over Cerritos. The Bulldogs are 16-1.

Simmons and Swan each defeated Cerritos’ No. 1 player, Kiaan Askia, who was 44-1 going into the match.

In other Southern Section girls’ tennis playoff matches:

Los Alamitos 18, Hart 0--The visiting Indians (6-9) were swept away by the Griffins (14-3) in a Division II match.

Harvard-Westlake 16, Glendora 2--Romy Mehlman, Chanie Raykoff and Jackie Gortman lost only one game in their nine singles matches as the Wolverines (18-3) won the Division III match at Studio City.

CROSS-COUNTRY

City Section preliminaries--Jose Padilla of Monroe and Kirstin Kabo of Kennedy won their respective heats in the meet at Pierce College.

Padilla won the first heat with a personal best of 15 minutes 25 seconds over the three-mile course to repel Ricardo Valenzuela (15:28) of Belmont, who led for the first two miles.

Kabo turned in the fastest time (19:18) of the girls’ meet in Heat 2 to defeat Roseanna Heagerty (19:21) of Birmingham.

The top five teams and the top 15 individuals in each heat advanced to the City finals.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Van Nuys d. Birmingham, 15-2, 15-1, 15-5--Susie Chambers, Jenna Panatier and Ruby Tovar each had five kills to lead the Wolves in a City Section 3-A quarterfinal at Van Nuys.

Connie Chae had 14 assists and Jenny Choi had five service aces for top-seeded Van Nuys (15-0).

Chatsworth d. Bell, 15-5, 12-15, 15-12, 15-6--Debbie Smith had 13 kills for the host Chancellors in a City 4-A quarterfinal.

Erica Martes and Georgia Roy added eight kills each for Chatsworth (12-3). The No. 4-seeded Chancellors will play top-seeded Palisades on Tuesday night at Palisades.

San Pedro d. El Camino Real, 14-16, 15-12, 16-14, 6-15, 15-10--Jessica Dinaberg had a career-high 41 kills, but the second-seeded Conquistadores (13-1) were upset by the seventh-seeded Pirates (11-0) in a 2 1/2-hour City 4-A quarterfinal match at El Camino Real.

Samantha Small added 13 kills and Lisa Brende had 60 assists for El Camino Real.

Lincoln d. Sylmar, 13-15, 15-13, 7-15, 15-2, 15-11--Mayra Ariza had 13 kills to lead the Spartans but it wasn’t enough in a City 3-A quarterfinal match.

Kristy Duncan had 11 kills and 10 digs for Sylmar (10-5).

Harvard-Westlake d. Hoover, 15-1, 15-5, 15-9--Lesley Cobin had 10 kills and Amanda Selby had nine to lead the Wolverines (17-0) in a Southern Section Division II first-round match.

Lindsay Powers had 25 assists for Harvard-Westlake.

Lancaster Bethel Chrisitan d. Riverside Bethel Christian, 15-4, 15-3, 15-9--Ellen Migasi had 10 kills to lead the Eagles (16-4) in a Southern Section Division VI first-round match.

Nordhoff d. Western, 15-1, 15-7, 15-5--Jami Sawyer had 11 kills to lead the host Rangers in a first-round Southern Section Division IV playoff match.

Canyon d. Nogales, 15-7, 15-7, 15-4--Darcy Frandsen and Susan Brondell each had nine kills and Heather Pilatic had 22 assists as the Cowgirls improved to 14-1 in Division III.
