IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES

With most of the automatic berths already decided, the waiting game now begins for schools hopeful of gaining a wild-card berth into the Southern Section playoffs.

Sunday, section officials will select the one wild-card team needed in each division to fill out the 16-team bracket, based on records and relative strengths of the leagues. While there are no county candidates in Divisions I and VIII, at least one team is a possibility in each of the other divisions that include an Orange County school:

Division II: At 5-5, Marina of the Sunset League is not likely to get the pick over Warren (6-4) of the highly regarded San Gabriel Valley League.

Division IV: This is perhaps the section’s deepest division; four teams with records of 6-3-1 or better will compete for the one extra spot. Just which teams those are has yet to be decided. If El Modena defeats Santa Ana Valley today, the Vanguards would finish 6-3-1 and in a tie with Canyon (6-2-2) for third place in the Century League; a coin flip would decide the league’s third-seeded team. Likewise, a three-way tie for second in the Baseline League between Damien (7-3), Claremont (7-3) and Chino (6-3-1) will leave one team out in the cold. But the wild-card berth will likely go to Newport Harbor, which tied Woodbridge for fourth in the Sea View League, each with an overall record of 7-3; Newport Harbor won the head-to-head meeting with the Warriors.

Division VI: Anaheim’s playoff hopes may have ended with its loss to Savanna Thursday in a game for third place in the Orange League. The Colonists are 5-5, as is Walnut of the Miramonte League, but Pioneer of the Del Rio League is 6-4.

Division VII: With no viable candidates from the Montview, Northern or Ocean Leagues, the wild-card spot will got to a county school. Pacifica (5-5), fourth in the eight-team Garden Grove League, might be that team. But if Sonora, which finished in a three-way tie with La Habra and Buena Park for second in the Freeway League, loses its coin toss today, the Raiders (6-4) would be a strong candidate.

Division X: With two games to play today, the Olympic league standings are still so much up in the air that little can be predicted. Should Brethren Christian (7-2) lose to Cerritos Valley Christian and not gain an automatic berth, it would be a leading candidate for the wild-card spot.

STARK CONTRAST

Of the 378 yards of offense gained by Garden Grove against Bolsa Grande Friday night, only 17 were the result of passes. The Argonauts were led by Manny Millan, who gained 240 yards in 23 carries and scored three touchdowns. Of Bolsa Grande’s 240 yards of offense, only 11 were the result of rushes. Brian Baughman completed 17 of 35 passes for 229 yards.

ON THE RECORD

“It’s been a long time coming, 14 years too long for this school. . . and to finally get the league championship with a shutout over Sunny Hills? C’mon, you’re kidding me. This is fantastic.”

--Brian Logan, Troy quarterback, after the Warriors defeated Sunny Hills, 28-0, to win the Freeway League championship, their first since 1979.
