Laguna Hills Rolls to 37-7 Victory Over Century

Laguna Hills put all of phases of its game together just in time to secure the Pacific Coast League’s third Division VII playoff slot with a 37-7 victory over Century Friday night at Santa Ana Stadium.

Running backs Fred Kim and Brendan McGraw supplied the big plays on offense, and the Hawk defense shut down the Centurions in the second half to end Century’s season.

Laguna Hills (7-3, 3-2 in league) amassed 479 yards in total offense including 365 yards rushing. Kim was responsible for 223 of those yards in 26 carries while McGraw scored four touchdowns, two on pass receptions and two on reverses.

“We’ve played well at times all year,” Laguna Hills Coach Steve Bresnahan said, “but this was the first time all year that we’ve played all four quarters well.”

Century (3-5-2, 2-2-1) kept the game close in the first half on the passing of Stan Villanueva, who finished the night with eight of 13 passes for 203 yards.

The Centurions tied the score, 7-7, in the first quarter on Villanueva’s 69-yard pass to Jorge Rodriguez, but Laguna Hills controlled possession on 33 of the remaining 48 plays in the first half. Laguna Hills took a 14-7 second-quarter lead on quarterback Justin Vedder’s 22-yard pass to McGraw.

Century didn’t manage a second-half first down until less than eight minutes remained in the game.

After Sako Yakinian made the score 17-7 with a 32-yard field goal with 6:42 left in the third quarter, McGraw went on a tear, scoring on a reverse of four yards and a 27-yard touchdown reception from McGraw for a 30-7 lead.

McGraw scored again late in the fourth quarter when he took another reverse went 79 yards for a touchdown. He finished with three receptions for 78 yards and 95 yards rushing in four carries.
