BIG EAST ROUNDUP : West Virginia (9-0) Romps Behind No. 2 Quarterback

Backup quarterback Darren Studstill passed for 274 yards and three touchdowns Saturday as unbeaten and ninth-ranked West Virginia rolled over Temple, 49-7, at Philadelphia.

Two of Studstill’s passes went to Ed Hill, who had four catches for 111 yards.

Studstill, filling in for injured starter Jake Kelchner, completed 17 of 28 passes.

Robert Walker led the rushing attack with 130 yards and two touchdowns in 14 carries.

West Virginia, 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the Big East Conference, has a showdown coming up Saturday against No. 3 Miami at Morgantown, W.Va.

Temple (1-9, 0-6) continued on a pace to set a Division I record for most points given up in a season. The Owls have given up nearly 50 points per game.

Virginia Tech 45, Syracuse 24--Maurice DeShazo threw two touchdown passes to tight end John Burke and Dwayne Thomas ran for 163 yards and a touchdown to lead the Hokies (7-3, 4-3) at Blacksburg, Va.

Virginia Tech capitalized on four turnovers by the Orangemen (5-4-1, 2-4) by scoring three touchdowns and a field goal and wrapped up its first bowl bid in seven seasons under Coach Frank Beamer. After the game, the players voted to accept an invitation to the Independence Bowl on New Year’s Eve.

During the last six minutes of the first quarter, Virginia Tech scored three touchdowns, blocked a punt, sacked Syracuse quarterback Marvin Graves twice and intercepted two of his passes.

No. 22 Boston College 33, Pittsburgh 0--Glenn Foley picked apart Pitt’s overmatched defense for three touchdowns and 360 yards in three quarters at Pittsburgh as the Eagles ran their winning streak to seven games.

Darnell Campbell, the top scorer in Division I-A with 114 points, scored on a four-yard run and a 61-yard pass play for Boston College (7-2, 5-1).

Pitt (2-8, 1-5) finished 0-6 at home in Coach Johnny Majors’ homecoming season.

Boston College next Saturday faces Notre Dame, which beat BC, 54-7, last season.
