OUTLOOK
The Panthers have a good shot at the league title, which would be their first since 1985. Five starters are back, plus Krauss, who would have been a starter but missed the season with a back injury. His return gives them the one thing they lacked last season: A big guy in the middle. “This is definitely the best returning group we’ve had since I’ve come here,” Bossenmeyer said. “We control our own destiny.” The seniors won league titles as freshmen and then as sophomores on the junior varsity. The talent is there. Gonzales led the county with 92 three-point field goals. He averaged 15.5 points and was a first-team all-league selection. Harris was the team’s second-leading scorer at 13.1 points and was also a first-team all-league selection. Neal averaged eight points and four assists. Cabalo averaged five points and four assists. Estrada and Worthem also averaged five points. Worthem, though, could be slowed by a knee injury he suffered during football season. In the league finale last season, the Panthers were beaten at the buzzer by Santa Ana Valley. It dropped them from second place to a tie for third. They bounced back the next day to defeat Foothill in a league playoff game and qualify for post-season play.
