Crescenta Valley’s Parque to Play Baseball for UCLA

Crescenta Valley High baseball player Jim Parque signed a letter of intent Tuesday to play for UCLA.

Parque, a 5-foot-8, 140-pound left-handed pitcher, said that USC was his top choice until visiting UCLA last weekend.

Parque posted a 6-4 record for the Falcons last year with an earned-run average of 1.88. The All-Pacific League selection struck out 77 and walked 16.

Chris Romero, a pitcher from East Los Angeles College, on Tuesday became the second junior college baseball player to sign an early letter of intent with Cal State Northridge.

Romero, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound right-hander, won six games as a freshman for East L.A. At L.A. Wilson High, Romero was a two-time All-City Section selection as a pitcher and first baseman. He had a two-year pitching record of 20-1 and was twice Northeast League Player of the Year.

Basketball

Two area high school girls’ basketball players have accepted scholarships to play for NCAA Division I teams.

Buena’s Mikko Giordano, an All-State Division I selection, chose Arizona over 70 other schools, and Summer Peterson of Rio Mesa will play for Nevada Las Vegas.

Soccer

The Master’s College is seeded first entering today’s National Christian College Athletic Assn. soccer tournament at Lee College in Cleveland, Tenn. Master’s (14-6-1), which lost to Westmont, 1-0, Saturday in the NAIA District 3 final, will play Greenville (Ill.) College in a first-round game.

Football

Van Nuys High tailback Larry Reed is expected to miss the City Section 4-A Division playoff opener Friday against Venice, Coach George Engbrecht said.

Reed, a junior who has rushed for 980 yards and 14 touchdowns in 156 carries, suffered a concussion when hit in the head by an opponent’s knee during the Wolves’ 35-6 win over Monroe last week.

Robert Levey, who has rushed for 436 yards and five touchdowns in 73 carries, will replace Reed.

Softball

Kristen Mills, a pitcher from Canyon High, has given an oral commitment to play next season at Long Island University.

Outfielders Tiffany Ray of Sacramento City College, Jessica Cunningham of Simi Valley High, and catcher/third baseman Jeanne Pray of Glendora High have signed national letters of intent with Cal State Northridge.

Cunningham, an All-Marmonte League selection, helped Simi Valley win the Southern Section Division I title in June.
