OUTLOOK

McCabe doesn’t like to talk about the loss of three all-league players--Chad Murray, Gabe Viramontes and Ryan Hartshorn. He won’t dwell on a first-round exit in last year’s playoffs or lament that his team has no starter over 6-foot-3 while Sonora may “have the tallest team in the U.S.” He says, “We’ll be the littlest team in the league, but that doesn’t bother me. We have tough kids and we have balance.” Young, the football team’s quarterback, has started since his freshman year and will do so again at the point. Schatz returns after averaging 10 points and 10 rebounds during league play last season, when the Indians finished with a 7-1 spurt to take second. Ruckman, Vandenburg and Mankiewicz are also potential starters who can score, and LaTour might also crack the lineup. LaTour started throughout the summer after leading the sophomore team to a 20-0 record and league championship last season. “I must have been brain damaged to put together the tough nonleague schedule we have,” McCabe said. “But we’re gonna be ready when league comes; we’re moving in the right direction.”
