Recipes to Fill Bowls Need Day to Simmer : Junior college football: Regular-season finales will determine playoff entries from Western State and Foothill conferences.

The possibilities are . . . well, nobody knows for sure.

As the junior college football regular season enters its final week today, several teams will be jockeying for position in the bowl sweepstakes. But most teams won’t know their fate officially until Sunday, when pairings will be announced for the bowls scheduled for Dec. 4.

Among the 32 schools listed by the California Community Colleges Commission on Athletics in a pool of teams that will be considered for a bowl game are Antelope Valley of the Foothill Conference, and Glendale, Moorpark and Valley of the Western State Conference.

In past years, the three WSC teams would have been practically guaranteed a bowl appearance because the conference generally played host to two games--the K-Swiss Bowl and the K-Swiss Classic.

But Aviva Kamin, the conference commissioner, said Friday the WSC probably would play host to only the K-Swiss Bowl because there aren’t enough strong teams in the conference to justify two games. To be considered for a bowl game, teams must have a winning record overall.

Moorpark (7-2, 7-1 in conference play) and Glendale (5-3-1, 4-3-1) are assured of that much regardless of who wins their North Division showdown tonight at Moorpark.

The winner would have the option of playing host to the K-Swiss Bowl or going to another game, if invited. The loser would have to hope someone else calls if the winner decides on the K-Swiss, which also features the second-place team in the South Division.

After tonight, that either will be Valley (7-2, 6-2) or Pierce (5-4, 5-3), which are tied with 2-2 records in the division and meet at 7:30 at Pierce.

Bakersfield (9-0, 8-0) is 4-0 in the South Division and has already clinched the title, but the Renegades will play host to the Shrine Potato Bowl.

Besides Bakersfield, Moorpark seems to have the inside track to a bowl game with a victory tonight.

“We have an offer from the Southern California Bowl for Moorpark,” Kamin said, “but Moorpark wants to stay in the K-Swiss Bowl.”

A Foothill Conference team--probably San Bernardino Valley, Antelope Valley or Citrus--will play host to the Southern California Bowl.

San Bernardino Valley (8-1, 6-0) must beat Antelope Valley (6-3, 5-1) at home tonight to secure the bid. But if Antelope Valley wins and Citrus (7-2, 5-1) beats Desert (6-3, 4-2), the scenario is more complex.

In that case, Citrus would play host to the Southern California Bowl because Antelope Valley and San Bernardino Valley have been the hosts more recently.

If Antelope Valley defeats San Bernardino Valley and Desert beats Citrus, the Marauders will play host to the game. But if they lose, Antelope Valley Coach Brent Carder, who has taken the team to eight bowl games in his 24 seasons, does not anticipate getting a shot elsewhere.

“If we lose, I think our bowl game possibilities are realistically over,” he said.
