OUTLOOK

Stephens, who has nine years of coaching experience in Ohio and coached the Trabuco Hills junior varsity team last season, takes over a Mustang team that has experience and depth at the guard and forward positions. He also expects Trabuco Hills to be balanced. “Any one of five players could step up and score in double figures for us,” Stephens said. He expects the strength of the team to be at the forward spot, especially Ross. Trabuco Hills also has experience at point guard with the return of Henderson and Smulowitz. Both saw extensive playing time last season. Hatch is expected to move into the other forward spot, and Stephens also expects a big contribution from Okano. The Mustangs lack experience off the bench, but players elevated from the junior varsity--including Knill, Murillo and Warnick--will help. Stephens preferred a trapping style of defense during his Ohio coaching days, but isn’t sure the Mustangs will utilize the trap. Stephens picks Costa Mesa and Estancia as league co-favorites, but believes Trabuco Hills can play the role of spoiler.
