OUTLOOK

The Mustangs start from scratch with all newcomers every season because Kilpatrick is an L.A. County facility for juvenile offenders and a player’s stay rarely is longer than one year. Fortes appears blessed with talent and size to match and should improve on last year’s losing record. “We’re much stronger up front,” Fortes said. “The guards are inexperienced, but there’s quite a bit of quickness.” The Mustangs last made the playoffs in 1990 but have the potential to return to postseason play this season.

OUTLOOK

The Mounties are young but should pick up right where they left off last season. Montclair Prep lost to Brethern Christian in the Division V-AA quarterfinals. Anderson, who averaged 11 points, 3.2 assists and 2.5 steals a game as a freshman, is the lone full-time returning starter and will commandeer a perimeter game that features loads of quickness. But don’t discount the Mounties’ inside game. Montclair Prep has plenty of height in the front court. Once the football season ends, the Mounties will gain five more players and should be in full swing by January.
