COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Summers Leads Chapman to 75-54 Victory in Its Season Opener

Rod Summers scored a team-high 13 points as Chapman opened its season with a 75-54 victory against Southwestern of Texas Friday in the Claremont Tip-Off tournament.

Summers, a senior forward, made five of six shots. Stefan Mumaw added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Panthers.

Umahl Anderson added 10 points for Chapman, which led at the half, 37-25. Southwestern shot 36% (16 of 50), and made only three of 15 three-point attempts.

Chapman shot 47% (26 of 55) and made 16 of 18 free-throw attempts (89%).

In the UC San Diego Triton Tip-Off tournament:

La Verne 70, Concordia 59--Pat O’Curran led Concordia (1-1) with 13 points. Joe Gonzalez scored 18 for La Verne (1-2).

In women’s nonconference basketball:

Arizona 90, Cal State Fullerton 77--Autumn Hollyfield had 32 points, making eight three-pointers, for the Titans. Shawn Coder had 22 points and teammate Kim Conway had 20 for visiting Arizona. Fullerton is 0-1.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference women’s preseason tournament:

Cal Baptist 66, Southern California College 63--Demetria Dixon scored 25 points to lead Cal Baptist. Jamie Zitterkopf had 24 points and 14 rebounds for SCC.

Fresno Pacific 49, Concordia 44--Wendy Johnson had 13 points and eight rebounds for Concordia. Dana Coates was the leading scorer for Fresno Pacific with 13 points.

In the Cal State Stanislaus women’s basketball tournament:

San Francisco State 66, Chapman 61--Heidi Sorour scored 17 points for Chapman (1-2), which made 19 of 60 shots from the field (31.7%). Sorour was four of 18 from the field, including one of eight on three-point attempts. However, she was eight of nine on free-throw attempts.

Chapman plays Stanislaus tonight at 8 in the round-robin tournament.
