HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Hart Roars Past Taft, Into Final

Center Cody Patterson scored Hart High’s first 15 points of the second half to lead the Indians to a 53-34 victory over Taft in a semifinal of the Simi Valley basketball tournament.

Patterson finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds as Hart improved to 3-0. Ricky Steele scored 13 points for Taft (2-1), which was outscored, 17-7, in the first quarter.

In other boys’ games:

Santa Barbara 56, Simi Valley 54--Jabari Simmons scored 18 points to lead the visiting Dons in a semifinal game of the Simi Valley tournament. Simmons also forced a steal with six seconds to play. Vernon Simmons led the Pioneers with 18 points and nine rebounds, and Nathan Simmons added 13 points.

Santa Barbara will play Hart in the final today at 8 p.m. Simi Valley will play Taft in the third-place game at 6:30.

Notre Dame 57, Royal 45--Tommy Zapata scored 22 points and Rich Igou added 18 for the Knights (2--2), who outscored Royal, 15--1, in the fourth quarter of a consolation game in the Simi Valley tournament.

Chatsworth 75, Canyon 47--Eddie Miller scored 17 points and Trenell Floyd added 16 for Chatsworth in the fifth-place semifinal of the Saugus tournament.

Chatsworth (2-1), upset by La Canada a day earlier in the quarterfinals, led, 18-7, after the first quarter and 40-19 at halftime.

La Canada 88, Monroe 67-- Senior forward Eric Sanchez scored 41 points to advance La Canada (3-1) to the championship round of the Saugus tournament.

Forward Dante Holly led Monroe (1-1) with 16 points and eight rebounds. Guards Shaka Steiner and Kenyatta Niles scored 14 and 12, respectively. Wayne Nix scored seven fourth-quarter points coming off the bench.

San Fernando 55, Highland 47--Barry McWright and Jerome Elliott each scored 13 points for San Fernando in a consolation game of the Saugus tournament.

The Tigers (1-1) took a 10-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and never trailed.

El Rancho 67, Burbank 66--Host Burbank had a 66-61 lead with 55 seconds left, but El Rancho (1-1) made six consecutive free throws to win the consolation semifinal of the Burbank-Hoover tournament.

Brian Baker led Burbank (0-2) with 20 points and nine rebounds. Brad Warner added 13 points and 12 rebounds.

El Camino Real 82, Canoga Park 68--Charles Adams had 37 points and Jamal Connish had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the visiting Conquistadores (2-0) in a nonleague game. Jody Edington had 24 points for Canoga Park.

Reseda 62, Hamilton 59--The host Regents overcame a 12-point deficit entering the fourth quarter of a nonleague opener. Senior guard Trenton Cross paced Reseda with a game-high 17 points. The win was the 100th of Coach Jeff Halpern’s career.

Village Christian 60, Bosco Tech 52--David Gustafson scored a game-high 27 points to lead the Crusaders (1-2) in pool play of the Charter Oak tournament.

Montclair Prep 66, Littlerock 55--Forward Wes Hinkston scored 11 points and had 11 rebounds, and guard Reed Berglund added 21 points to lead Montclair Prep (2-0) in the semifinal round of the High Desert Classic.

Jonathan George had 15 points for Littlerock (1-1).

St. Bonaventure 90, L.A. Lutheran 35--Pat Rifley led St Bonaventure (2-0) with 14 points and eight rebounds in the semifinals of the Providence tournament.

Verdugo Hills 57, Perris 45--Bryan De Los Reyes scored six of his team-high 17 points in the third quarter to help Verdugo Hills (1-1) win a consolation semifinal of the Canyon Springs tournament.

GIRLS

Notre Dame 68, Birmingham 34--Lucy Marandjian came off the bench to score 14 points and make nine steals for Notre Dame (3-0) in a semifinal game of the L.A. Baptist tournament. Maggie Dixon added 10 points.

Hart 82, Serra 21--Liz Sanders scored 15 points and had eight rebounds and eight steals for the Indians (1-2) in a consolation semifinal game of the Alemany tournament.

El Camino Real 50, University 38--Tami Jones scored 14 points and Samantha Small added 11 points and 12 rebounds for host El Camino Real (1-1).

Calabasas 38, Villanova 10--Melissa Krolik had 10 points and 12 rebounds for host Calabasas.
