PREP BASKETBALL : Warnick, Punto Spark Trabuco Hills Over South Torrance

Rob Warnick scored 30 points and Nick Punto made six three-pointers to lead Trabuco Hills to an 89-76 victory over South Torrance in the first round of the Coca-Cola Converse boys’ basketball tournament Monday at Trabuco Hills.

Punto finished with 20 points, as Trabuco Hills (2-0) scored 51 points in the second half and advanced to the quarterfinals on Wednesday to play Lynwood.

In other tournament games:

Rancho Bernardo 68, Tustin 62--Leroy Parham scored 16 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter, including eight of eight free throws and two three-pointers, for Rancho Bernardo. Doug Gottlieb scored 25 points for Tustin.

Lynwood 86, El Modena 73--Ryan Villmer had 24 points and 11 rebounds for El Modena (2-3).

In the Costa Mesa Kiwanis Invitational:

Century 60, Calvary Chapel 36--Thomas Harmon had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Ike Harmon added 13 points and 11 rebounds for Century (1-1). Jason Chedotte scored 13 points for Calvary Chapel.

Fullerton 53, Saddleback 44--Tim VanDenburg had 22 points, six rebounds and four steals for Fullerton (2-1). Sam Mankiewicz added 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Indians (2-1). Chris Bradshaw scored 17 points for Saddleback (0-1).

Laguna Beach 44, Bolsa Grande 42--Junior Gordon Orsborn led both teams with 18 points and 14 rebounds and Ian McDonald added 10 points for the Artists (3-2), who led by 11 at halftime. Brian Baughman scored 10 points for Bolsa Grande (1-1).

In the La Canada Flintridge tournament:

St. Margaret’s 50, Rosemead 49 (OT)--Damian Raibon made one of two free throws with three seconds remaining in overtime to put the Tartans (1-2) ahead by one. Raibon had 23 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots and teammate Lupe Rodriguez had nine assists.

In the La Quinta tournament:

Katella 85, Liberty Christian 60--Nick Roditis had 20 points, including five three-pointers, for Katella, which led, 62-37, after three quarters. Bobby Garcia and Mike Pahl each scored 12 points for the Knights, who improved to 4-1.

Bob McClung had 29 points and eight assists and Dave Vaccaro had 23 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots for Liberty Christian (0-2).

La Quinta 59, Westminster 53--Greg Greenfield had a game-high 25 points, eight rebounds and five assists for La Quinta. Kevin Doane added 11 points and 13 rebounds and Todd Snyder had 10 points and eight assists for the Aztecs (1-0).

In the first round of the Ladycat Classic girls’ basketball tournament:

Brea-Olinda 98, Pasadena 27--Nicole Erickson scored 24 points, including three three-pointers, and Susan Rhodabarger added 14 for Brea-Olinda (5-0). Sarah Beckley had 13 points, Kiyoko Miller had 11 and Colleen Hudson 10 for the Ladycats, who outscored Pasadena, 34-2, in the first quarter.

Fontana 57, Rancho Alamitos 48--Akilah Rodgers had 20 points and 13 rebounds and Michelle Frank added 14 points for Rancho Alamitos (0-1). Sharmayne Murphy scored 21 points for Fontana.

Rancho Cucamonga 61, Troy 54--Jennie Gadd scored 21 points and had eight rebounds for Troy (3-1).

Torrance Bishop Montgomery 59, El Modena 31--Jamie Shine had nine points and 12 rebounds for the Vanguards (0-3).

In the Beverly Hills tournament:

Estancia 66, Palisades 22--Freshman Jenny Jennings had 22 points and 10 rebounds and Laura Czingula had 14 points for Estancia (4-0) in a first-round game.

In the Eagle Invitational:

Liberty Christian 34, Connelly 30--Sophomore Jessica Clark scored 10 points and Buffy Cugno’s offensive rebound basket in the final minute helped Liberty Christian (2-2) win a consolation game.

In the Woodbridge tournament:

Garden Grove 61, Santa Margarita 55--Michol Murray had 26 points and 11 rebounds to lead Garden Grove (1-1) in a consolation game.
