Mater Dei Rallies to Win in St. Louis

Mater Dei trailed by three points after three quarters but rallied for a 71-67 victory over Chicago Mt. Carmel in the first round of the KMOX Shootout in St. Louis.

Miles Simon had 27 points to lead Mater Dei (5-0). Mt. Carmel outscored Mater Dei, 17-10, in the third quarter to take a 48-45 lead but couldn’t hold it. Antoine Walker had 30 points and 12 rebounds for Mt. Carmel.

Clay McKnight had 16 points for Mater Dei. He and Simon each had two three-pointers.

In consolation games of the boys’ tournament at Capistrano Valley:

Esperazna 74, South Torrance 61--Mike Thimgan had 28 points and John Latting had 22 for Esperanza (3-3). Vic Brown had 26 points for South Torrance.

Long Beach Wilson 89, Trabuco Hills 80--Rob White scored 30 points for Long Beach Wilson (6-1). Rob Warnick and Ryan Karnoff each had 22 points for Trabuco Hills (2-2).

In the quarterfinals of the Costa Mesa Kiwanis tournament:

Anaheim 48, Costa Mesa 39--Chanta Iemsisanith scored 18 points, including five free throws late in the fourth quarter, and Frank Castillo added 13 to lead Anaheim (3-0). Lance Merrifield scored 19 points to lead Costa Mesa. The Colonists advance to the semifinals against Century at 7 p.m. today.

Magnolia 61, Fullerton 40--Brandon Hearvey scored 18 points and Thay Sisomvang added 15 for Magnolia (5-1), which advances to Saturday night’s championship game. They will play the winner of tonight’s Century-Anaheim game.

In the consolation round:

University 68, Saddleback 47--Dustin White had a game-high 22 points, including six three-pointers, and 11 rebounds and Demetrius Zeigler added 18 points and seven steals for University (2-1). Mel Lete scored 15 points to lead Saddleback (1-2).

In the Dana Hills tournament:

Dana Hills 83, Capistrano Valley Christian 55--Dimitrius Karidis had 26 points and eight assists, and Kent Lacy added 16 points to lead Dana Hills (2-1) in the quarterfinals.

In the Glendora tournament:

Brea-Olinda 75, La Puente Bassett 69--Matt Bodiford made 14 of 15 free throws and Paul Scott made 10 of 12 for Brea-Olinda (1-5). The Wildcats made 33 of 41 free throws.

In consolation round of the La Quinta tournament:

Estancia 78, Garden Grove 46--Clay Frenz had 18 points and seven assists and Tom Feeney had 12 points to lead Estancia (3-3). Mike Campuzano scored a game-high 22 points for Garden Grove.

Savanna 62, Cypress 49--Forward Malcolm Dougan made seven three-pointers for Savanna (5-1).

In the Santa Maria tournament:

Edison 74, Paso Robles 63--Ben Beard scored a game-high 26 points and Jason Sist and Ali Tofighi each added 13 to lead Edison (1-0). The Chargers will face Morro Bay in the quarterfinals tonight.

In the Laguna Hills tournament:

Pacifica 84, Laguna Hills 53--Jon Surface had 16 points for Pacifica.

In the Valley Christian tournament:

Loara 70, Whittier La Serna 65--Scott Davis scored 22 points and Jay Kowny added 14 points and 10 rebounds for Loara (4-1).
