Mike Good was grinning, Enrico Bozman was laughing, and their coach, John Barnes was smiling after the Griffins ran up 554 yards of total offense in a 39-21 victory over Huntington Beach in the Southern Section Division II football final Saturday at Cerritos College.

Good, a senior quarterback, completed 21 of 32 passes for 403 yards and four touchdowns and Bozman, a senior running back rushed for 161 yards in 20 carries to help the Griffins (14-0) win their third consecutive Southern Section championship.

Good’s performance was the fourth-best in Orange County history.

“He’s a kid who came out of nowhere and worked his butt off,” Barnes said. “The defense played well tonight, the offense was outstanding and Good came to play tonight. This tastes just as sweet as the others.”

Huntington Beach (13-1), playing in its first sectional championship since winning the Lower Division minor title in 1935, did everything it could to prevent the game from turning into a laugher.

But the Griffins had too much running, passing, and everything, for the Oilers to handle, and the Griffins’ 17-point, seven-minute scoring blitz in the first half put Los Alamitos ahead to stay, 20-3.

Jeff Kolasa kicked a 19-yard field goal with 2 minutes 33 seconds remaining in the first quarter, then Huntington Beach countered with a 10-play, 61-yard drive which resulted in a 38-yard field goal by Jason Bartusick, tying the score, 3-3, with 10:46 remaining in the second quarter.

Good and wide receiver Anthony Tucker took over from there.

First Tucker, who caught five passes for 146 yards and three touchdowns, caught a pass on a slant pattern, broke Josh Holland’s tackle and scooted past Kevin Wray for a 53-yard touchdown to give Los Alamitos a 10-3 lead with 10:02 remaining in the second quarter.

Then, after a Huntington Beach punt, Tucker capped a two-play 67-yard scoring drive by catching a pass from Good in the flat and zooming 62 yards for another touchdown and a 17-3 lead with 7:42 remaining in the second quarter.

“We’d stop them for a few plays, then, boom, they’d bust a play for 50 yards or so,” said Tony Gonzalez, Huntington Beach’s tight end/linebacker who finished with eight receptions for 90 yards.

“What can you do against that? They’re a hell of a team,’ Gonzalez said.

After Kolasa, who kicked four field goals, hit on a 32-yarder to make it 20-3 with 3:58 left in the second quarter, the Oilers tried to get back into it with their defense.

While Los Alamitos protected Good well all night, holding Huntington Beach without a sack, Oilers’ defensive tackle Nick Ziegler broke free late in the second quarter and jarred the ball as Good attempted a pass with 1:18 remaining in the half.

Good’s wobbly pass found the arms of Huntington Beach linebacker Justin Draeger, who returned the interception 67 yards for a touchdown and cut the lead to 20-10.

“We got that one interception return but that was it,” Huntington Beach Coach George Pascoe said.

Offensively, the Oilers moved the ball but could only punch it into the end zone once, on Justin Flagg’s one-yard touchdown run with 10:18 left in the game to cut the lead to 36-21.

Quarterback Levi Schuck passed for 193 yards, completing 20 of 35 passes with no interceptions while rushing for a team-high 56 yards in 14 carries.
