COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Ohio Upsets No. 14 Connecticut

Ohio University made 17 of 21 free throws in the final 2:13 to preserve an 85-76 victory over No. 14 Connecticut on Wednesday night in the Big Island Invitational at Hilo, Hawaii.

Geno Ford scored 22 points and Gery Trent added 19 for Ohio (7-3).

Connecticut (7-1) tied the score, 2-2, but trailed the rest of the game.

“We tried to catch them down the stretch. We fouled them, but they hit the shots,” Connecticut Coach Jim Calhoun said. “They stood up to us.”

Trent scored 11 points in the first eight minutes and 15 in the first half. His dunk with 12:48 left in the first half gave Ohio a 20-8 lead.

No. 6 Kansas 73, Rhode Island 60--Richard Scott scored 17 points and Greg Ostertag had 13 rebounds to lead the Jayhawks in the Golden Harvest Classic at Kansas City.

Kansas (12-1) committed 28 turnovers.

Rhode Island (3-2) made only 35% of its shots.

No. 4 Temple 63, Fairleigh Dickinson 51--Aaron McKie scored 18 points and Rick Brunson added 17, including eight free throws in the final 1:39 as the Owls won the third-place game of the ECAC Holiday Festival at New York.

Temple (5-1) led, 34-23, at halftime and increased its lead to 52-33 with 7:00 left despite going scoreless for 5:24 as Fairleigh Dickinson closed to within 42-32.

No. 9 Massachusetts 94, Maryland 80--Lou Roe scored 30 points and Mike Williams had 25 points and 10 assists as Massachusetts won the Hall of Fame Classic at Springfield, Mass.

Massachusetts (9-1) pulled away after center Joe Smith of Maryland (7-2) went to the bench with four fouls with 14:05 left and Massachusetts ahead 54-49.

No. 11 Louisville 83, Florida 68--Dwayne Morton scored 22 points and the Cardinals withstood a second-half rally to win at Honolulu and reach the championship game of the Rainbow Classic.

Louisville (7-1) was leading, 21-16, with 10:20 left in the first half when Morton’s follow shot started a 17-4 run as the Cardinals took a 46-25 halftime lead.

Florida is 8-2.

No. 15 Georgia Tech 71, St. John’s 69--Ivano Newbill’s layup with 3.6 seconds left gave the Yellow Jackets the victory at New York in the championship game of the ECAC Holiday Festival.

Georgia Tech (9-1) led throughout the second half until St. John’s (7-3) went on a 7-0 run to take a 62-61 lead with 3:03 left.

No. 17 Wisconsin 103, Grambling 83--Freshman center Rashard Griffith scored 20 points at Madison, Wis., as the Badgers (8-0) continued their best start since beginning the 1985-86.

Griffith grabbed seven rebounds and blocked four shots. Michael Finley added 18 points and Tracy Webster 17 for the Badgers.

Dan Avery scored 22 points for Grambling (4-5).

No. 19 Syracuse 85, Colgate 74--Sophomore forward John Wallace scored 14 of his 24 points in the first first half to lead the Orangemen at Syracuse, N.Y.

Lawrence Moten added 19 points for Syracuse (8-1). Colgate (4-5) kept pace early, but fell behind when Syracuse went on a 17-2 run.

No. 20 Oklahoma State 79, UC Santa Barbara 74--Oklahoma State (8-4) used a 28-10 second-half run en route to the victory at Honolulu.

Santa Barbara is 3-6.

OTHER GAMES

Jeff Webster scored 24 points and led a second-half surge that carried Oklahoma (6-2) to a 63-54 victory over Eastern Kentucky (4-5) in the All-College tournament at Oklahoma City. . . . Arturas Karnishovas scored 21 points and Seton Hall (6-2) limited San Diego to 30% shooting in a 67-47 victory in the first round of the Seton Hall-Meadowlands tournament at East Rutherford, N.J. Seton Hall will face Stanford (7-1), a 73-60 winner over Manhattan (5-3), in the championship tonight.

Matt Maloney made a three-point basket with 65 seconds left to put Pennsylvania (6-1) ahead for good in an 81-79 victory over Georgia (5-4) in the championship game of the U.S. West tournament at Seattle. . . . Sam Allen of Washington (2-6) scored 12 points, including six during a crucial second-half rally that gave the Huskies 57-45 victory over Pacific (6-5) in the consolation game of the U.S. West tournament.

Isaac Burton had 22 points as Arizona State (5-3) outscored Villanova (4-4), 15-4, in overtime to beat the Wildcats, 73-62, in the championship game of the ASU-Tribune Classic at Tempe, Ariz. . . . Tremaine Wingfield rescued Texas (6-4) from defeat by making a shot to tie the score with two-tenths of a second left in regulation, then made the game-winner at the buzzer of the second overtime, giving the Longhorns a 93-91 victory over Utah (6-3) at Austin, Tex.
