The showdown between two of Orange County’s best teams turned into a blowout Tuesday as third-ranked Santa Ana Valley forced 27 turnovers and posted a 68-28 victory over 10th-ranked Magnolia in a nonleague boys’ basketball game at Santa Ana Valley.

Magnolia shot 22% (11 of 51) from the field against a tenacious Santa Ana Valley defense. The Falcons (14-2) held Magnolia to 10 points in the second and third quarters combined to take a 53-20 lead into the fourth quarter.

Frank Henderson, the Sentinels’ top scorer who is averaging 17 points, missed all seven shots he took and did not play in the second half. Magnolia also played without starting center Brandon Hearvey.

“We didn’t expect a 40-point game tonight,” Santa Ana Valley Coach Rich Prospero said. “It was a little ragged, but I accept that from this team. When you press and want to play up-tempo with a young point guard, that’s how it gets.”

Sophomore point guard Olujimi Mann finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists, four steals and five turnovers. Mann and most of the starters did not play in the fourth quarter for Santa Ana Valley.

Michael Riggins scored a team-high 13 points and Darnell Adamson added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Falcons, who had 11 players score.

La Shawn Neal had eight points and Todd Callahan had 11 rebounds for Magnolia (10-5).
