Sam Turks or no Sam Turks, the Inglewood High basketball team appears to have Redondo’s number. The Sentinels easily beat the Sea Hawks for the second time this season, 86-59, Wednesday night in a nonleague game at Redondo.

Last month, Turks scored 16 points to help Inglewood beat Redondo, 86-64, in the championship game of the Pacific Shores tournament.

Turks missed Wednesday’s game after bruising his left thigh in Thursday’s loss to Westchester in the final of the Artesia tournament. Inglewood Coach Pat Roy said he expects the senior to play Wednesday in an important Bay League opener at Peninsula.

But even without its floor leader, Inglewood (13-2) pulled together behind strong games by forwards Paul Pierce and Antoine Young and backup point guard Carlo Calhoun.

“We thought when we played them earlier this season we didn’t really do all the things we wanted,” Roy said. “I think tonight the team came together and they really picked up the slack.”

Pierce and Young worked well inside against Redondo (12-3), which was at a disadvantage after center Brian Hattingh left the game in the second quarter because of a sprained right ankle. The 6-foot-6 senior is expected to miss a minimum of two weeks.

“Antoine did a great job for us,” Roy said. “He was the spark. We wanted to get the ball down low, and he and Paul did a good job down there.”

After leading at halftime, 28-23, the Sentinels scored 31 points in the third quarter. Inglewood finished the quarter with a 14-4 run to take a 59-40 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Young filled in for Ralph Shelton, who was in foul trouble, and contributed 13 points and five rebounds in the third quarter.

“All year long the third quarter has been ours,” Roy said. “It either makes us or breaks us. We just made some good adjustments at halftime.”

Calhoun, a junior getting his first start at point guard, began a little shaky, but calmed down in the second half, finishing with nine points.

“Carlo came in and did a real good job,” Roy said. “He was able to help get the ball down low where we were too much for them.”

Down low was where Pierce picked up most of his game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds.

Guard Morgan Ensberg led Redondo with 16 points and forward Ahmad Holmes, filling in for Hattingh, scored 12.
