BACK TO SCHOOL: Steve Stenstrom, Stanford’s record-setting quarterback from El Toro High, says the National Football League will have to wait: He announced Friday that he will use his final season of eligibility for the Cardinal rather than turning pro a year early. . . . “I’ve still got some things I want to accomplish here,” says Stenstrom, a 1989 Times All-County selection. He says another year of college football might help make him a first-round NFL draft pick.

LESS GRAY? The Orange County League of Women Voters is already at work on its New Year’s resolution: to get more--and younger--members. There are about 100 members in the nonpartisan group designed to assure an informed electorate. But only a few of them are younger voters. . . . “As one of our members put it, the menopause group is well-represented,” says League spokeswoman Bobbie Corbett. “What we need is a lot of young blood--men as well as women--so we can keep this thing going.”

GAINING FAME: Weiland, who grew up in Huntington Beach as Scott Weiland listening to punk rock bands, is finally being recognized for his own rock efforts. He’s lead singer for Stone Temple Pilots, whose song “Plush” was nominated for a Grammy this week for “Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal.” . . . . Weiland’s known by fans partly for his fuchsia-dyed hair, but also for supporting feminist causes. The band’s breakthrough single, “Sex Type Thing,” is a strong statement against date rape.

WIDER TV: It’s not likely to cut into the ratings for Beavis and Butt-head, but KOCE-TV, the Huntington Beach-based public television station, is adding “The Black Entrepreneur: On Location” to its lineup tonight at 5:30. . . . . The half-hour show takes a look at small-business successes by African Americans across the country. Says a KOCE-TV spokeswoman: “We are constantly looking for chances to serve a wider audience.”
