Because of the following the Pacifica boys’ basketball has suddenly developed, its Garden Grove League game next week against Kennedy is being moved from Wednesday to Thursday night. Wednesday also happens to be bingo night at Pacifica.

Pacifica Coach Bob Becker said the school could not handle the bingo and basketball crowds on campus the same night. Bingo fans have always been rather intense at Pacifica, but until this season the basketball fans were largely apathetic. However, Pacifica is 10-1 this season and ranked sixth in Orange County.

“Our fast-paced style of play is rather infectious,” Becker said. “We’ve got people keep coming back for more after they see us play.”

The Costa Mesa-Estancia girls basketball showdown took on added significance Thursday night when it was announced before the game that a spare rib dinner at a local restaurant would be awarded to this year’s series winner.

Costa Mesa won the first meeting, 52-51, in overtime. Estancia can still win the rib dinner if it defeats Costa Mesa by more than a point in the final meeting. Also on the line is the prestigious Lady Bell Trophy, which was rung by players on both teams before Thursday’s game.
