ROUNDUP : CSUN Women End Skid at 8

Sophomore guard Michelle Esparza had 25 points and 14 rebounds as Cal State Northridge defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 87-84, in overtime of a nonconference women’s basketball game Saturday night.

The win snapped Northridge’s eight-game losing streak.

Forwards Shannon Crouse (19 points on seven of 11 shooting) and Maureen Batiste (16 points, seven of 10) led the Matadors (2-11) to one of their best shooting performances (49.2%) of the season.

In other women’s basketball games:

Ventura 76, Glendale 54--Julie Hardy scored 34 points for Ventura in the Western State Conference interdivision game at Glendale.

Ventura (13-4, 3-0) raced to a 40-19 lead at halftime.

Keri Peterson led Glendale (6-7, 2-1) with 16 points.

Pierce 67, Compton 65--Angela Rich scored 16 of her 22 points in the first half and sank a three-point shot in overtime to give host Pierce the lead for good in a Western State Conference game. Annette Covany and Michelle Brewer each scored 12 points for Pierce (3-11, 1-2).

Moorpark 57, Valley 50--Janette Oriza had 13 points and 15 rebounds, and Misty Goodnight added 13 points and 11 rebounds for Moorpark in a Western State Conference game at Valley. Joy Garcia had 11 points, seven assists and five steals for Moorpark (6-10, 3-0). Nicole Baynes had 13 points for Valley (6-13, 1-2).

Canyons 67, Cuesta 53--Canyons held Michelle Cornell, the leading scorer in the Western State Conference, to four points and Carlisa Hamgaki scored 17 to lead Canyons (6-11, 2-1).

Terra Bruessel added 10 assists for Canyons.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Master’s 86, Cal Baptist 61--James Mosley scored 22 points and Emeka Okenwa added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the host Mustangs, who rolled to their fourth victory in a row and 11th in 12 games in the nonconference game. Doug Leaman scored 12 points and Rogerio Soares came off the bench to add 12 points for The Master’s (15-3), which outrebounded Cal Baptist, 39-19.

Moorpark 83, Valley 62--Sean Martin scored 26 points and Paul Foster added 22 off the bench as visiting Moorpark (16-4, 2-0) rolled to a victory in the Western State Conference interdivision game. Martin added 10 rebounds and seven assists.

Cuesta 75, Canyons 68--Charles Thomas and Colin Bryant combined for 25 of his team’s 35 second-half points, leading Cuesta (16-5, 1-2) to a Western State Conference victory. Bryant finished with 19 and Thomas with 16. Randy Eason led Canyons (6-11, 1-1) with 18 points.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Notre Dame 58, Alemany 47--Tommy Zapata had 12 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and five steals for host Notre Dame (7-8, 2-2) in the Mission League game.

Johnny Garcia, Rich Igou, Oscar Soltero and Dave Sobel each added 10 points for the Knights, who snapped a two-game losing streak.

Chris Engler scored 22 points for Alemany (3-10, 0-4).

Burbank 64, Burroughs 53--Isaiah Kearson and Keith Flowers, the Bulldogs’ starting backcourt, each scored 18 points to lead host Burbank (7-8, 1-3) to its first Foothill League victory. Kearson made four three-pointers and was six for six from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. Burroughs drops to 1-9, 0-4.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Hart 62, Canyon 19--Host Hart held Canyon (0-3 in league play) to one point in the first period and rolled to its fourth consecutive Foothill League victory. La Cresha Clark had 16 points, seven assists and four steals for Hart (12-6, 4-0), which forced 37 turnovers.

Thousand Oaks 66, Royal 52--Alissa Corey connected on 10 of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter to lead the host Lancers (11-4, 3-1) in a Marmonte league game. Corey finished with 20 points.

Alemany 60, Notre Dame 29--Samantha Rigley scored 21 points, Carly Funicello had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Kelly McKay added 12 points and five steals for Alemany (14-0, 3-0) in a Mission League game at Notre Dame.

Newbury Park 60, Simi Valley 40--The host Panthers (12-3, 3-0) had 18 assists in the Marmonte League victory. Julie Wastell led Newbury Park with 14 points, and Jann Thorpe added 12 and 10 rebounds.

Sara Griffin led Simi Valley with 11 points.

Village Christian 53, Paraclete 35--Christy Ludwig scored 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the visiting Crusaders (13-1) in a nonleague game.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Village Christian 1, Buckley 0--Travis Wenkalman scored on an assist from Darin Chu midway through the first half of a nonleague match as Village Christian improved to 4-5.

Burroughs 2, Burbank 0--Gret Guenther and Roberto Perez scored for Burroughs (7-6-1, 3-1) in a Foothill League match.
