Dana Hills’ Cruickshank Decides on Washington

David Cruickshank, a defensive lineman from Dana Hills, made an oral commitment to Washington, former Dana Hills Coach Jack Murry said Tuesday.

Cruickshank, a 6-foot-6, 230-pound Times second-team all-county selection and first-team All-Southern Section Division I pick, chose Washington over USC.

Dana Hills’ quarterback Scott Covington (Miami) and linebacker Matt Schuetz (Oregon), made commitments Monday.

Linebacker Vic Harper, wide receiver Mike Whitaker and defensive lineman Jesus Morales made oral commitments to the Merchant Marine Academy, a Division III program in Kings Point, N.Y., Murry said.

Scott Bertoni, Fountain Valley quarterback, has made an oral commitment to Nevada.

Bertoni, a 6-1 1/2, 180-pound senior who passed for more than 2,000 yards and 21 touchdowns, chose Nevada over Colorado State and New Mexico State.

“They may not have the big-time schedules the Pac-10 schools have, but they have great facilities . . . and you can breathe up there,” Bertoni said.

Mike Phelps, Irvine quarterback, has decided to commit to Oregon after visiting Eugene recently, Irvine Athletic Director Rick Curtis said.

Phelps, 6 feet 5, 210 pounds, guided the Vaqueros to the Southern Section Division IV championship, their third title in three seasons.

Tony Gonzalez, a tight end from Huntington Beach, was the only Orange County player selected to the Schutt Sports Group All-American High School football team.

Scholastic Coach publication coordinated a group of coaches, writers and recruiters to choose the 100-player team.

Rodney Sermons of La Puente Bishop Amat, George Perry of San Bernardino and Matt Redman of Palos Verdes Peninsula were the only other Southern Section players named.

Gonzalez, who has orally committed to California and will play football and basketball, helped Huntington Beach reach the Division II finals last season.
