Brad Cervantes of Trabuco Hills has made an oral commitment to USC and quarterback Justin Vedder of Laguna Hills committed to Boston University.

Cervantes, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound defensive lineman, earned All-Southern Section Division VIII honors and helped the Mustangs win the Division VIII championship last season. He also was named All-Pacific Coast League at tight end.

“I’m excited,” Cervantes said. “They said I’m too small to play Division I line, but they like my speed, so I’m moving to outside linebacker.”

Cervantes, who plays first base for Trabuco Hills and was a first-team All-Pacific Coast League selection last year, will also play baseball for the Trojans.

Laguna Hills Coach Steve Bresnahan said Vedder, a 6-1, 180-pound senior, chose Boston University, a Division I-AA school, over Nevada.

Vedder started three seasons at Laguna Hills and in 1991 helped the Hawks win their first Southern Section football championship. He completed 55% of his passes for 2,129 yards and 20 touchdowns last season and also rushed for four touchdowns.

The Hawks reached the Division VIII semifinals last season, where they lost to eventual champion Trabuco Hills.
