A Newbury Park man was in critical condition Saturday evening after he fell from the Borchard Road overpass onto the Ventura Freeway and was struck by a car, officials said.

Pushpanden (Peter) Dhillon, 36, of Newbury Park was seen hanging from the overpass about 12:20 p.m. Saturday, shortly before he fell into a southbound lane, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

A motorist told sheriff’s deputies she saw Dhillon as he fell and she swerved but was unable to avoid hitting him.

Traffic in the southbound lanes was stopped for about 30 minutes while Dhillon was treated by paramedics, officials said. He was then taken to St. John’s-Pleasant Valley Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition late Saturday.

Dhillon has multiple fractures to his legs, pelvis and ribs, a hospital spokeswoman said.

It was not known if Dhillon intended to jump or if he fell accidentally, a sheriff’s official said.
