COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Good Pitching Leads Dons in Opener

Brandon Hoalton gave up one run on four hits in seven innings, and Brian Martineau struck out four of the seven batters he faced as Rancho Santiago defeated East Los Angeles, 8-1, Saturday in the Dons’ baseball season opener at the South Bay Classic tournament at Harbor College.

Mike Bellovich and Joe Fraser each went two for three and hit two-run home runs Rancho Santiago.

In the Citrus-Rio Hondo baseball tournament:

Citrus 4, Orange Coast 1--Nick Valencia and Brian Igoe had two hits apiece for Orange Coast (0-1). Bobby Sanchez went six innings, giving up six hits and striking out four, for Citrus (1-0).

In the Fresno City baseball tournament:

Golden West 17, Santa Rosa 1--Tom Fill had a triple, drove in two runs and scored three as Golden West (3-1) advanced to the semifinals.

In an earlier game, Rich Hughes was three for three with three runs batted in, and Shawn Allbee gave up eight hits and struck out five in 5 1/3 innings as Golden West defeated Merced, 10-6.

In the Fullerton/Cerritos baseball tournament:

Fullerton 10, San Bernardino Valley 6--Jon Gardikis went four for four, scored twice and drove in two runs, and Mark Veronda hit a three-run homer in the season-opener for Fullerton, which will continue tournament play today at Southwestern.

Darrell O’Brien hit a grand slam for San Bernardino Valley in the fifth, after Fullerton had taken an 8-1 lead.

In nonconference baseball:

Cypress 10, Sacramento Cosumnes River 0--Eight Cypress starters got a hit in the season opener.
