PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP : Newport Harbor Manages to Tie Top-Ranked Corona del Mar

Newport Harbor tied top-ranked Corona del Mar, 1-1, in a Sea View League boys’ soccer game Wednesday at Corona del Mar High.

Todd McIlwain scored the tying goal early in the second half for the unranked Sailors (5-12-5, 3-8-2). Sailor goalkeeper Steve Kleha had 13 saves.

Jason Boyce scored the goal for the Sea Kings (18-2-4, 11-0-2).

In other Sea View League games:

Saddleback 2, Santa Margarita 1--John Maldonado and Raul Montes scored for third-ranked Saddleback (17-3-3, 8-1-3). Seventh-ranked Santa Margarita is 13-4-4, 6-4-2.

Tustin 2, Woodbridge 1--Alex Seoane scored in the 25th minute of the second half to give Tustin the go-ahead goal. Tye Irwin made eight saves for the Tillers (11-8-2, 6-5-2). Gustav Gratzer scored for Woodbridge (4-6-3 in league).

In the Century League:

Canyon 3, Villa Park 0--Clay Kilbarger, Sasha Saneff and Todd Stearman scored for eighth-ranked Canyon (16-5-4, 6-2-2). Goalie Aaron Harries had 10 saves for the Comanches, who finished first in league.

Foothill 2, El Modena 0--Steve Patterson scored two unassisted goals for Foothill (7-7-7, 3-3-4).

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 2, Loara 1--Brian Hurley, back after missing three games with a knee injury, scored the game-winner with four minutes remaining for El Dorado (9-6-6, 4-3-2). Kevin Haynes scored the other Hawks’ goal. Kevin Johnson scored for Loara.

Esperanza 2, Los Alamitos 2--Esperanza (13-5-5, 5-1-3) missed a chance to clinch a league title, but still can do so with a victory or tie Friday against Loara. Jake Thomas and David Clemmins scored for the Aztecs.

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 2, Troy 0--Sunny Hills (14-5-3, 7-1-1) remained tied for the league lead with Sonora after shutting out host Troy. D.J. Buckley scored his 16th goal for the Lancers.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 1, Trabuco Hills 0--R.B. Edwards scored on a throw-in from Kyle Brown in the 17th minute of the second half, as Laguna Hills (11-9-1, 7-2) moved into a tie with Trabuco Hills (7-2) with one game remaining.

In the South Coast League:

Dana Hills 1, Capistrano Valley 1--Capistrano Valley’s Chris Tullar scored in the second half to tie Dana Hills (11-8-1, 1-6-2) and keep the Cougars (12-5-5, 4-2-3) within a game of first-place Mater Dei.

Mater Dei 5, Mission Viejo 0--John Gerdis scored two goals and Kevin Quigley, Mike McCabe and Olivier Rossi each scored one for Mater Dei (19-1-4, 6-1-2), which clinched at least a tie for the league championship. Mission Viejo is 3-13-4, 2-5-2.

El Toro 2, San Clemente 1--Brent Stringham and Jose Lopez each scored for sixth-ranked El Toro (5-3-1 in league). Troy Wenger scored for San Clemente (7-9-7, 1-3-5).
