HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Thompson Helps Sylmar to Its First Winning Basketball Season

Sylmar High clinched the first winning boys’ basketball season in the 33-year history of the school with a 99-44 Valley Pac-8 Conference victory over Canoga Park Wednesday at Sherman Oaks CES.

The Spartans (12-8, 7-2 in league play) were led by Lamarr Thompson who scored 23 points and took 27 rebounds. Joe Guerrera added 20 points and Michael Farmer scored 21 and had 14 assists for Sylmar.

Poly 55, Monroe 54--Shaka Stiner’s three-point basket pulled the Vikings to within one with 10 seconds to play, but Poly grabbed the rebound after missing the front end of a one and one and ran out the clock to secure the Valley Pac-8 Conference victory at Poly.

Darrin Drew scored 17 points to lead the Parrots (11-6, 6-3). Stiner paced Monroe with 15 points.

Verdugo Hills 60, Marshall 50--Senior center Chan Cornish scored 24 points and grabbed 21 rebounds in leading the Dons (5-11, 3-7) to an upset victory over Marshall (7-3 in league play) in a Northern Conference game at Verdugo Hills.

It was the first game the Dons have played in their own gymnasium since the gym floor underwent refinishing nearly three months ago.

North Hollywood 100, Locke 47--Damon Ollie scored 28 points and grabbed 31 rebounds to lead the host Huskies (13-5) to a nonleague victory. Fantasia Johnson scored 18 points and dished out 15 assists. Arthur Lee scored 16 and had 13 assists.

Birmingham 73, Sherman Oaks CES 49--Five juniors scored in double figures to pace the Braves’ Valley Pac-8 Conference victory over Sherman Oaks CES at Birmingham.

Scott James led the Braves (7-9, 4-5) with a game-high 20 points, followed by Marc Fernando, Scott Le Winter and Mark Ellis with 11.

Taft 57, Kennedy 49--Ricky Steele scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the host Toreadors (12-7, 3-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference game. Jelani Janisse led Kennedy with 21 points.

Grant 42, Van Nuys 37-- Ron Patterson hit five consecutive free throws down the stretch to seal the victory for the Lancers (16-3, 7-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game. Patterson scored a game-high 19 points. Mike Carter led Van Nuys with 12 points.

Simi Valley 73, Westlake 72--The Warriors (15-6, 9-4) rallied from an 18-point third-quarter deficit only to come up short in a Marmonte League game at Westlake.

With Westlake behind by three and time running out, Steve Aylsworth (20 points) missed a long attempt that would have tied the game. Billy Miller (10 points) grabbed the rebound and scored to get the Warriors to within a point as the buzzer sounded.

Thousand Oaks 60, Camarillo 58--The Lancers remained in first place with a Marmonte League victory at Camarillo. Jason Hartman led Thousand Oaks (19-6, 10-3) with 20 points. Camarillo dropped to 11-12, 7-6.

Notre Dame 67, Bishop Montgomery 66--Tommy Zapata scored on a layup with seven seconds left to give the Knights the win in a Mission League game. Rich Igou finished with a game-high 27 points and Zapata added 24 for Notre Dame (11-13, 6-7).

Crespi 77, Chaminade 69--Gianandrea Marcaccini scored 31 points and Nick DiPasquale (16 points) and Marc Lubaszka (15) also scored in double figures for host Crespi (5-7, 9-13) in a Mission League game. John Gunn (21 points) and Mike Yang (20) led Chaminade (3-10, 7-15).

Oakwood 55, Windward 44--Mitchell Goodman scored 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the visiting Gorillas (9-8, 8-5) in a Liberty League game.

Marshall Fundamental 60, Village Christian 54--The Crusaders, who clinched the Alpha League championship on Tuesday, played most of their second-string players in a league defeat at Muir. Regulars Chad Hanson (18 points) and David Gustafson (17) led the Crusaders (15-9, 6-2) in scoring.

Oak Park 68, Bishop Diego 50--Jason Kezelman sank five three-pointers and scored 19 points, and Nick Rattray added 12 points for host Oak Park (21-2, 8-0), whose players celebrated their first unbeaten Tri-Valley League season by cutting down the nets.

Harvard-Westlake 52, St. Bernard 44--Jason Collins had 25 points and 11 rebounds, and Scott Garson added 10 points for host Harvard-Westlake (21-2, 11-2) in a Mission League game.

Holy Martyrs 46, Providence 43 (OT)--Anto Mahrukian’s 13 points paced host Holy Martyrs (8-11, 6-6) in a Liberty League game.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Roosevelt 77, North Hollywood 49--The visiting Huskies were without two starters, including second-leading scorer Darvina Merritt, who was ill, and fell to the Roughriders (17-1) in a nonleague game. Anna Celaya (20 points) and Carmina Verduzco (10) led North Hollywood (11-6).

Chatsworth 60, Cleveland 33--Georgia Roy had 15 points and 15 rebounds to lead the visiting Chancellors (6-5, 3-2) to a Northwest Valley Conference victory. Nancy Vincent added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Chatsworth.

Monroe 53, Poly 43--Dimara Haymond (13 points, 17 rebounds), Anna Marquez (12 points, 14 rebounds) and Michele Zamora (12 points) each scored in double figures for Monroe (11-7, 5-3) in an East Valley League game at Poly. Dora Lopez (19 points, nine steals) and Crystal Gillespie (13 points) led Poly (8-11, 4-5).

BOYS’ SOCCER

Harvard-Westlake 5, St. Bernard 0--Jordan Elias scored two goals to lead the host Wolverines (16-0-4, 11-0-1) to a Mission League victory. Harvard-Westlake had already clinched its fourth straight league title.

Sylmar 3, Poly 2--Saul Cabrera scored on a penalty kick midway through the second half to break a 2-2 tie and send Sylmar (7-3-1, 5-2-1) to a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory. Cabrera had two of Sylmar’s goals and his brother, Israel, scored the other.

Hector Padilla and Jorge Sanchez scored for Poly (3-9-1, 0-7).

Notre Dame 3, Bishop Montgomery 1--Chris Sailer scored his 19th goal in 19 games to lead the Knights (13-7-1, 6-5-1) in a Mission League match. Hernando Chavez and Steve Lee also scored for Notre Dame.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Chaminade 1, Louisville 1--Tami Pivnick tied the score midway though the second half on a penalty kick for Chaminade (8-10-4, 5-4-2) in a Mission League match.

Andrea Licari scored for Louisville in the first half.

Chatsworth 5, Granada Hills 2--Kim Pickup scored the go-ahead goal midway through the second half to break a 2-2 tie for the Chancellors (12-0-1, 6-0).
