GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD / 1994 PREVIEW : Woodbridge
Coach: George Varvas (13th year).
1992-93: Fifth at the Orange County Championships, fourth in the Sea View League finals, 6-1 league dual meet record.
Key returners: Wendy Brown, Sr., HJ; Angela Burgess, Jr., SP, DT; Julie Snyder, Jr., 800, 1600; Meisha Wilson-Duval, Jr., 100, 200, 400.
Key newcomers: Frannie Simmons, So., 400; Erin Stovall, Fr., LJ.
Outlook: A team that isn’t hoping for a repeat of last season. After finishing fifth at the Orange County championships and 6-1 in its Sea View League dual meets, the loss of Wilson-Duval to injury before league finals spelled the quick demise of the Warriors. The talented sprinter was the county runner-up in the 100 (12.75 wind-aided) and 200 (25.68 wind-aided) as well as third in the 400 (59.74). Burgess, one of the standouts on the Warriors’ outstanding basketball team, finished third in the discus at the Orange County championships and fourth in the shotput. Brown tied for fourth in the county high jump, and Stovall is one of Varvas’ diamonds in the rough in the long jump. Simmons and Snyder will solidify the middle-distance races for the Warriors.
