HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Penalty Kick Carries Calabasas Back Into Championship Match

Adam Cooper scored on a penalty kick with two minutes left in regulation to give Calabasas High a 1-0 victory Tuesday over visiting Cerritos Valley Christian in a Southern Section Division V semifinal boys’ soccer match.

Cooper scored the goal after the Coyotes’ Shayne Ferber was dragged down from behind by a Cerritos Valley Christian defender while he was on a breakaway.

The victory lifted Calabasas (14-3-4) into the Division V championship match for the second season in a row. Calabasas will face Moorpark in the final Friday at Gahr High.

The Coyotes lost to Santa Paula, 2-1, last year.

Moorpark 4, Cathedral City 2--Curtis Silverest, Pat Russo, Paul Dojo and Jamie Suraci each kicked in a goal to help the Musketeers (26-2-1) beat Cathedral City (21-2-2) in a Division V semifinal match.

Kennedy 2, Hamilton 1--Miller Rodriguez scored the winning goal with five minutes left in the first half of the City Section quarterfinal match at Kennedy.

It was the eighth victory in a row for Kennedy (15-3) and sent the Golden Cougars into Thursday’s semifinal match at Bell.

Bell 3, Van Nuys 1 (2 OT)--Oswaldo Williams and Luis Castillo scored in the final three minutes of the second overtime for top-seeded Bell in the City Section quarterfinals.

Federico Arroyo scored his 19th goal in the first half for visiting Van Nuys (10-3-2).

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Banning 56, Taft 34--The Pilots (15-11) proved too much for Taft (9-3) and coasted to an easy victory in a City Section 3-A Division semifinal playoff game at Narbonne High in Harbor City.

BASEBALL

Reseda 5, Grant 3--Alfredo Guerra’s leadoff home run keyed a five-run fifth inning for Reseda, sending the Regents to a first-round victory at the L.A. Invitational tournament. Guerra finished with two hits, as did Grant’s Josh Weiss. Jorge Macias (1-0) got the victory with two innings of one-hit relief.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Esperanza 1, Buena 0 (4 OT)--Freshman Kim Gallo scored on the final penalty kick to send visiting Esperanza to the Southern Section Division II final after four overtime periods. Monica and Barbara Almaraz, and Megan Munday each scored on penalty kicks for third-seeded Buena (21-4-4).

Chadwick 2, La Reina 1--Tara Lyerly scored on an assist from Kelly Osborne 25 minutes into the second half for La Reina, but the top-seeded Regents couldn’t get closer in the Southern Section Division IV semifinal at Chadwick. Goalkeeper Jenny LaFemina had eight saves for La Reina (23-3).

SOFTBALL

El Camino Real 4, Chaminade 0--Jennifer Gould pitched a two-hitter and struck out 14 for host El Camino Real in a nonleague opener. Tammy Jones had two hits, including a double, and knocked in a run for El Camino Real.

Reseda 9, Westchester 0--Rosie Yates and Kristy Rebbeck combined on a no-hitter and contributed five hits for the visiting Regents in the nonleague season opener. Yates had three hits, Rebbeck two.

Poly 15, Marshall 8--Adriana Nava turned in a three-for-three, six-RBI performance to lead the visiting Parrots in their nonleague season opener. The senior first baseman doubled twice, and hit a grand slam in the third inning.

Junior second baseman Teresa Medina drove in three runs with a triple and a double for Poly.
