COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Mikesell Hits 4 Home Runs for Glendale
Glendale College designated hitter Steve Mikesell hit four home runs, a school record, in the Vaqueros’ 15-4 victory over host Valley in a Western State Conference game Thursday.
Mikesell hit a solo home run in the second, a two-run homer in the fifth, a three-run homer in the sixth and a two-run homer in the seventh. He has five home runs this season.
Shortstop Randy Vickers added two solo home runs for Glendale (4-6, 2-0 in conference play), increasing his total to six this season. Vickers also hit two doubles and drove in four runs.
Sophomore John Nall, a 6-foot-5 left-hander, earned his second victory in as many decisions, pitching eight innings and allowing four runs.
Glendale took a 3-0 lead through 2 1/2 innings, but Valley tied the score with three in the third. The Vaqueros put the game away by scoring four in the fifth and five in the sixth.
Valley dropped to 2-10-1 and 0-2.
Canyons 12, Santa Monica 3--Johnny Davis hit two home runs and drove in five runs in the WSC game at Canyons.
Davis’ first homer came with one runner on in the first inning. He drove in his third run with a second-inning single and had another two-run homer in the third.
R.J. Fenolio was three for three and scored three runs. Chris Pfatenhauer was two for four, driving in three runs and scoring twice as Canyons improved to 5-5, 1-1. Santa Monica is 1-10, 0-2.
Ventura 7, Moorpark 5--Chris Mace’s two-run homer in the fifth inning proved decisive for Ventura (1-0 in conference) in a WSC game at Ventura.
Kevin Nykoluk and Aaron Fisher hit solo home runs for Moorpark (6-5-1, 1-1).
Bakersfield 9 Pierce 2--Larry Barnes hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning and added a three-run triple in the eighth to give Bakersfield (9--6, 2--0) a WSC victory.
SOFTBALL
Canyons 7, El Camino 2--Kasey Miller was two for two for visiting Canyons in a nonconference game. Marianne Winchester (2-0) pitched a seven-hitter with two strikeouts.
