HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS : Top-Ranked Marina Girls Shut Out Peninsula for Title, 3-0

The Huntington Beach Marina girls’ soccer team, ranked No. 1 in the state, won the Southern Section Division I championship Friday, defeating Palos Verdes Peninsula, 3-0, at Gahr High.

The victory gave the top-seeded Vikings (28-0-1) their second consecutive title. Last season, Marina was co-champion with Claremont.

Amy Rubenstein opened the scoring in the 38th minute. The goal came off a corner kick after Peninsula had several opportunities to clear the ball.

In boys’ games:

Claremont 2, Upland 0--The Wolfpack’s Jason Christensen scored on a rebound when Colby Jackson’s free kick bounced off the crossbar in the 45th minute.

The free kick came after Upland goalie Philip Teague was given a red card for intentionally taking down Dejan Nagl on a breakaway.

Jackson later scored on a breakaway.

Claremont is 19-6-4, Upland 21-5-4.

Calabasas 1, Moorpark 1--After tying during the regular season, the Frontier League opponents tied again in the Division V title game and were named co-champions.

Herbie Sirota scored in the ninth minute for Calabasas (13-3-3).

Patrick Russo tied it early in the second half for Moorpark (26-2-2).
