HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Camarillo Continues Slugging in Westside Tournament Win

Robert Smith drove in four runs with two triples to lead Camarillo High to a 15-6 victory over University on Saturday in a Westside tournament game.

The Scorpions, who have scored 36 runs in two games, had 11 hits. Nathan Kaup had two hits, three runs batted in and three runs.

Starting pitcher Aaron Hanel (1-0) had five strikeouts and no walks in five innings.

In other Westside tournament games:

Chatsworth 8, Ventura 1--Ray Daryabigi (1-0) pitched a four-hitter and went three for four with two stolen bases for the Chancellors. Mike Amato, Tony Montiel (two RBIs) and Brandon Murphy each had two hits.

Rio Mesa 5, Westchester 2--Junior left-hander Richard Soliz allowed no earned runs in a four-hitter for Rio Mesa (1-1). Albert Ambriz’s double and Donald DiDomizio’s sacrifice fly in the second inning gave the Spartans a 3-0 lead. Eric Flores went two for three with two stolen bases.

Montclair Prep 16, Culver City 6--Montclair Prep scored 15 runs in the final two innings.

The Mounties trailed, 6-1, in the sixth when they erupted for nine runs with two out. Darrell Dent stole home while Culver City’s catcher went to the mound without calling time out.

Montclair Prep (2-0) added six more runs in the seventh. Sophomore catcher Andrew Miller went three for five with four RBIs and Matt Muler also had four RBIs.

Saugus 8 Santa Monica 1--Six players each had two hits for the Centurions (2-0) and Steve Rogers pitched five solid innings.

Hueneme 4, Palisades 3--Raudel Flores scored the winning run on a bases-loaded single by Art Bolen (three for four) in the bottom of the seventh for Hueneme (1-1).

Chaminade 10, Taft 2--Kevin Lohman’s triple with the bases loaded highlighted a five-run fourth inning for Chaminade. Chaminade (1-1) got solid pitching from Gabe Crecion and Casey Cote, allowing the Toreadors (1-1) three hits.

Crecion, Scot Dey and Adam Crecion each had two hits.

Notre Dame 10, Canyon 2--Rich Igou’s three-run home run in the fifth lifted Notre Dame. Freshman Juan Montes pitched three innings for the save, striking out four.

Hart 1, Channel Islands 0--Luis Sanchez outdueled Channel Islands’ Rene Sanchez. Hart (2-0) scored in the fifth inning.

Crossroads 9, Oxnard 7--Oxnard got run-scoring singles from Eric Terrill, Chuck Harrington and Ernie Hernandez in a five-run first inning before Crossroads got even.

In El Segundo tournament games:

Burroughs 6, Banning 5--Steve Barrett walked with the bases loaded to score Devin Grace as Burroughs won in the seventh. Barrett was two for two with four RBIs and Josh Cartee had two hits.

Westlake 4, Millikan 2--Chris Flanagan pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts for Westlake (2-0) in a second-round game.

Simi Valley 3, West Torrance 2--Brian Kavanagh scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch with two outs in the sixth inning after a pair of West Torrance errors allowed him to get into scoring position in an El Segundo Tournament Second round game.

Bill Scheffels struck out 10 and scattered five hits. Jeff Michael and Kary Kozlowski both homered for Simi Valley (2-0).

In a Loara tournament game:

El Dorado 14, Newbury Park 6--Brian Collins was two for four and had four RBIs for Newbury Park. Keith Smith added two hits.

In L.A. Invitational tournament games:

Van Nuys 9, Fairfax 7--Frank Casaccia’s three-run triple keyed Van Nuys’ five-run fourth inning.

Jose Casco’s solo home run in the sixth gave Van Nuys a 9-7 lead. Yuri Cuervo went three for three with two RBIs.

Burbank 5, Verdugo Hills 4--Shawn Montgomery hit two home runs and drove in four runs for Burbank (1-1).

In nonleague games:

Quartz Hill 13-8, Serra 2-2--The Rebels (2-0) pounded 24 hits to sweep Serra in a nonleague doubleheader at Quartz Hill.

Albert Miller went four for five on the day with two RBIs, scored three runs and walked four times. Kyle Goss had four hits, including three doubles, and five RBIs.

Village Christian 18-10, Brethren Christian 8-6--Mike Wertz hit a two-run home run to spark a Village Christian seven-run rally in the second inning of the nonleague doubleheader at Village Christian. Mike Spielman hit a two-run single in the same inning.

Rene Abeyta hit three doubles in the first game for Village Christian (2-0), which had 21 hits in the two games. David Gustafson added four hits, three in the second game.

St. Bonaventure 11-6, Paraclete 7-8--In the first game, Travis Spurgeon’s two-out triple drove in two runs as the Seraphs took the lead for good with three runs in the fifth inning. Spurgeon had five hits in the two games.

Dan O’Gara had a single, double and triple and scored three runs in the second game. Dennison Winchell had five RBIs, including a two-run triple.

SOFTBALL

Notre Dame 5, Burroughs 0--Senior Crista Corpening pitched a one-hitter for Notre Dame in a first-round game of the Simi Valley tournament. San Marcos defeated the Knights, 4-2, in a second-round game.

Simi Valley 2, Dos Pueblos 0--Simi Valley scored two runs in the first inning and Debbie Hatfield pitched in a first-round game.

Simi Valley 1, Westlake 0--Nicole Newhart drove in Jessica Cunningham in the fourth inning and Sara Griffin pitched a one-hitter for Simi Valley.

Westlake’s Kelly Dearman singled with one out in the seventh.

Alemany 4, Apple Valley 0--Sophie Conteraz pitched a one-hitter and sophomore Gloria Rodriguez went three for three and drove in two runs to lead the Indians to a first-round victory. Jamie Moore added a home run.

Alemany 9, Westminster 3--Gloria Rodriguez had two triples and three RBIs to lead the Indians (2-0) in a second-round game.

Burroughs 6, North Hollywood 5--The Huskies tied the score with three runs in the top of the seventh on Leila Davila’s two-run triple and Anna Celaya’s two-out RBI single. Burroughs won in the bottom of the inning when Holly Squire drove home Angie Centeno.

Westlake 3, La Reina 0--Kelly DiArman threw a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts and one walk to lead Westlake. She also had an RBI triple and scored twice.

La Reina 4, Dos Pueblos 2--Junior shortstop Katie Russell went two for three with one run and one RBI to lead La Reina in a second-round game. Michelle Nuesca stole three bases for La Reina.

In nonleague games:

Newbury Park 2-4, Righetti 0-1--Carolina Bernal pitched a one-hitter and sophomore Kristi Fox struck out 12 twelve in the second game as host Newbury Park swept a doubleheader. Brandi Funk paced Newbury Park in the second game with three hits.

Thousand Oaks 1-2, St. Joseph 0-1--Jesse Davenport threw a two-hit shutout in the first game and scored a run in the second to lead the host Lancers (2-0).

Davenport struck out nine with one walk and was on base with Jenny Bottomly when Chara Smith ripped a triple to right field in the fourth inning of the second game. Megan Keesling’s fifth-inning single in the first game scored Allison Bowman.
