OUTLOOK

Although Huntington Beach Claremont did not have a particularly good record, Whitman’s first season at the Cougars’ controls can be viewed as a success. Claremont’s roster was composed primarily of freshmen and sophomores who gained valuable experience. The on-the-job training produced many tough moments, but it could help the Cougars enjoy success this season. Only a few players on this season’s team lack at least some knowledge of how things work at the varsity level. Kimble is the best of the bunch. His hitting progressed well and he made many good plays at third base. He figures to be even better this season. Hazan is the leader of the pitching staff. He is a three-year starter with a strong arm and a variety of pitches. He becomes stronger as the game goes along. What’s more, Hazan provides Whitman with some flexibility because he can also play third base. Peacock was a pleasant surprise at shortstop. He was forced into the starting lineup because of an injury to the projected starter, but he more than held his own. His slick fielding at times provided bright spots for the Cougars.
