OUTLOOK

This is the first coaching position for Smith, who has spent the previous three years in the St. Louis Cardinals’ organization. Smith is eager to share his baseball knowledge. “I feel confident that I can teach the guys something,” Smith said. “I think we will be sound fundamentally.” Heritage Christian has several experienced, skilled players back from last season’s Express League championship team. Smith believes Heritage Christian has the talent to defend its title. Carreon is the team’s leader. He was a first-team all-league selection and is the league’s top defensive catcher. Acheson, Cortez and Scott Smith might composee a formidable pitching staff. Smith also believes his team will have no problem scoring runs. “Our bats are going to be good,” he said. “How we pitch is the key.”
